Your energy debt can be written off in full

Ofgem has quietly opened the Debt Relief Scheme, writing off old gas and electricity debt in full.

Up to £500m, 195,000 customers

Ofgem’s own estimate. The qualifying debt is cleared in full, with nothing for the customer to pay in.

There is no application

The supplier identifies the customer from its own records and writes to them. That is exactly why a write-off is so easy to miss — one unopened letter is enough.

Debt from two particular winters

Only debt accrued between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2024 qualifies, and at least £100 of it. Anything run up later is outside the scheme.

A means-tested benefit is required

Universal Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based JSA and income-related ESA, or Pension Credit — both Guarantee and Savings Credit.

And one condition people miss

You have to show signs of life: in the first stage a payment in the billing period is required. That is what knocks people out of the scheme.
