Universal Credit: who can claim and how much it pays

Britain’s main benefit for people on a low income or none. And the most common mistake: “I pay tax here, so I must be entitled.”

Check your visa condition first

Most temporary visas carry No recourse to public funds, and Universal Credit is on that list. Look at your own eVisa or Home Office decision, not at what friends say.

The cap is £16,000

Not annual income — money, savings and investments held in accounts. Sell a flat back home and keep the cash in the bank, and entitlement goes.

What it pays a month

Single under 25 — £338.58; 25 or over — £424.90. A couple both under 25 — £528.34; one of them 25 or over — £666.97. Elements for children and housing go on top.

55p in every pound

The payment does not stop when you start work: it tapers down by 55 pence for every pound you earn.

If you have no right to claim

Family, human-rights and Hong Kong visas have a separate route — an application to lift the condition, known as a change of conditions.
