What is Winnie-the-Pooh worth?

The first Winnie-the-Pooh book turns 100 today, 14 October 2026. A. A. Milne’s collection was published on 14 October 1926. This is the centenary being celebrated, rather than the birthday of Christopher Robin’s toy bear.

Which birthday is it?

The teddy bear was given to Milne’s son Christopher Robin on 21 August 1921, his first birthday, and was originally called Edward. The bear appeared in a Milne poem in 1924; the first story under the name Winnie-the-Pooh appeared in a newspaper in December 1925. So 14 October marks the 1926 book, not the toy’s arrival or the character’s first appearance.

How did the earliest drawings look?

English artist E. H. Shepard illustrated the book. His Pooh is a small, rounded teddy bear set among carefully observed trees and paths. Shepard began with loose pencil sketches, transferred selected lines to fresh paper, and finished drawings in pen and ink for printing. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds more than 250 of his pencil sketches for Milne’s books.

The museum records a surprising detail: Shepard based his final Pooh drawings on a bear owned by his own son, rather than on Christopher Robin’s toy. The original toy and the book character therefore look different. The New York Public Library shows photographs of the original toys. The UK Intellectual Property Office says Shepard’s illustrations remain protected in the UK until 1 January 2047. We therefore do not present a modern teddy bear as Pooh or republish the original artwork without permission.

What are the drawings and rights worth?

The centenary also shows how a children’s book became valuable intellectual property. These numbers measure different things and should not be added up as a valuation of Winnie-the-Pooh:

• £430,000 was the price paid at Sotheby’s on 10 July 2018 for Shepard’s original 1926 map of the Hundred Acre Wood. It is the sale price of one drawing at one auction, not a price for every illustration or the character rights. Sotheby’s sale account.
• £116,250 was the Royal Literary Fund’s royalty income from the Pooh Properties Trust in the financial year ended 31 March 2025, compared with £127,500 a year earlier. The Fund is one of four members of the Trust. This is its receipt, not total revenue across the franchise. The Fund’s annual accounts, note 4.

An original drawing’s auction price, royalties and sales of new books or toys are different measures. Neither source supplies a verified valuation of the whole brand in 2026.

BBC Radio 4 plans to air a play about protecting Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, the inspiration for Milne’s woodland, at 3pm UK time on Saturday 17 October.
