Who can get a growth grant?
Northern Ireland has opened a grant competition for eligible small manufacturers and tradeable service firms. An award can cover up to half of eligible costs, capped at £15,000. Official pages conflict on the 2 November closing hour, so submit before 9am.
Northern Ireland has opened Groundwork for Growth to eligible small businesses. The Department for the Economy announced the £2.3 million programme on 12 October 2026. It aims to support 240 businesses over three years. That is a programme target, not a guaranteed award for every applicant.
How much is available?
A successful business may receive up to £15,000, covering no more than 50% of eligible project costs. Official guidance sets the project cost range at £20,000–£30,000. For example, on £20,000 of eligible costs the maximum grant is £10,000; the business pays the other £10,000. At £30,000, the grant cap is £15,000. The grant is paid in arrears after costs are incurred and evidenced, so the business needs funding up front. Costs incurred before a formal offer are ineligible.

The scheme is for existing Northern Ireland manufacturers and businesses offering services capable of being sold outside the region that are not current Invest Northern Ireland clients and have already made sales. Applicants must have fewer than 250 employees and either turnover below £2 million or external sales below £250,000. At least one owner, director or partner must live in Northern Ireland. The business must show potential to employ ten people in total and, within five years, make 25% of its sales outside Northern Ireland or reach £250,000 in external sales. Retail, including online retail, transport and primary agriculture are among the excluded activities; see the full official guidance.
What should applicants do?
- Check the programme page and applicant guidance. Applications are scored and ranked; meeting minimum conditions does not guarantee funding.
- Prepare the latest accounts, a project plan and evidence of at least £8,000 in available funds. This application minimum does not remove the need to fund the full applicant share of the project.
- Submit through the official site before 9am local time on 2 November 2026. One part of the programme page says 9am while another part and the guidance say noon. Applying before 9am avoids relying on the later conflicting time. Invest NI says the window may close early or be extended.
Shortlisted businesses may be asked to attend a validation meeting and provide supporting evidence. Do not incur project costs expecting reimbursement before receiving a formal offer.
