International Driving Permit (IDP) in 2026: when Britons need one abroad and where to get it for £5.50

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an add-on to a UK licence for driving in some countries. It costs £5.50 and you can get one at PayPoint shops. Here are the three IDP types and when you need each.

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an international driving document that some countries require in addition to a UK licence. According to GOV.UK, an IDP costs £5.50 and you can get one in person at shops with a PayPoint terminal.

When does a Briton need an IDP?

For many trips you do not need one, but some countries require it to hire a car or drive your own. Whether it is needed in a particular country depends on that country’s rules, so before travelling check the destination’s requirements on GOV.UK and with the hire company.

What types of IDP are there?

According to GOV.UK, there are three types of IDP — based on the 1926, 1949 and 1968 conventions. Different countries recognise different conventions, so a trip through several countries can need two different permits. The type is chosen to match the destination.

What do you need to apply?

According to GOV.UK, to get an IDP you must have a valid Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence. You apply in person at a PayPoint shop; bring your licence, a passport-style photo and the fee.

How long is a permit valid?

Validity depends on the IDP type and is usually one to three years. The permit does not replace your licence — you must carry both your UK licence and the IDP when driving.

What should you remember after Brexit?

Rules for travel to Europe are updated from time to time, so do not rely on old experience. Car hire also often requires a credit card and sometimes proof of driving experience — check the hire company’s terms in advance.

An IDP is a cheap but sometimes critical formality: without it, some countries may refuse a hire car or issue a fine. Arranging it before you travel is far less stressful than hunting for a PayPoint shop on your last day.
