County Court Judgment (CCJ) for debt in the UK: what it is and how to clear it from the register
A CCJ is a county court's decision that you owe money. Pay the full amount within a month and it is kept off the register. Otherwise it stays for 6 years and harms your credit record.

A CCJ (county court judgment) is a formal court decision that you owe someone money. It usually follows when a creditor takes you to court over a debt and you do not respond to the claim in time. For many people it is an unwelcome surprise that hits their credit record. Here is what a CCJ means and what you can do, based on gov.uk.
Where does a CCJ come from?
If a creditor (a bank, phone company or other firm) believes you owe money, they can take you to court. You receive a court claim. If you do not respond by the date on the letter, the court can rule that you do owe the amount — that is the CCJ. So the first rule is: never ignore a court letter.

Judgments for debt go on the Register of Judgments, and the record is kept for 6 years. While it is there, getting credit, a mortgage or even a phone contract becomes harder, as lenders can see it and may refuse. If you ignore the judgment itself, the creditor can return to court to enforce it — for example through bailiffs or deductions from wages.
How to avoid a record
There is a key rule: if you pay the full amount of the judgment within one month, it is kept off the register (and removed if already added). That is the best outcome: the debt is cleared and your credit record is unharmed. So on receiving a CCJ, first work out whether you can pay the debt in full quickly.
What if you cannot pay at once?
If you cannot clear it within a month, the record stays for 6 years, but you can mark it as "satisfied" once paid — showing the debt is settled, which reduces the harm. Courts also usually let you pay by instalments on an agreed plan; the key is not to disappear and to stick to the arrangement.
Can a judgment be cancelled?
In some cases a CCJ can be set aside — for example if you do not actually owe the amount, or you never received the original claim and so could not respond. You apply separately to the court. If you dispute the debt, act fast and do not miss deadlines.
What should you do first?
On receiving a court letter about a debt, do not put it off: respond to the claim by the date given. If the debt is yours, weigh whether you can pay within a month to avoid a record. If you disagree, prepare your defence. Scotland has different rules. In a difficult debt situation, get free advice from a debt charity — better than staying silent and awaiting enforcement.
