A Punjabi artist headlines Wembley for the first time: Diljit Dosanjh fills the 90,000-seat stadium

On the evening of 12 September, Indian singer Diljit Dosanjh took the stage at Wembley Stadium — the first Punjabi artist ever to headline the country's biggest concert venue, with its 90,000 capacity.

What happened at Wembley on 12 September?

Dosanjh came on stage around 8pm and opened with the line "Punjabi Aa Gaye Wembley Oye!" — "the Punjabis have arrived at Wembley". The show ran for more than two hours.

The set blended Punjabi pop with rap and hip-hop: the crowd sang along to G.O.A.T. and Lover, and the night closed with Main Hoon Punjab and fireworks. During the show the artist brought fans on stage, handed out gifts and posed for pictures.

Why does it count as historic?

Wembley holds 90,000 people and remains the most prestigious concert venue in Britain. Until now its headliners have been English-language acts of the first rank. Dosanjh is the first to top the bill there with a Punjabi-language repertoire.

For the British music industry this is a number rather than a gesture: a stadium of that size only fills when an artist has a mass audience inside the country, not just in the country of origin.

How many people in Britain speak Punjabi?

In the 2021 census, Panjabi was the third most common main language in England and Wales after English and, in Wales, Welsh: 291,000 people, or 0.5% of residents aged three and over. Only Polish (612,000, 1.1%) and Romanian (472,000, 0.8%) rank higher.

These are comparable figures — and they explain how a non-English-language concert can fill a national stadium.

From the Wembley stage Dosanjh announced a show at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad in November 2026 — India's largest stadium venue.
