Great British Railways HQ confirmed for Derby with 600 apprenticeship places

The government has named Becketwell in central Derby as the site of the Great British Railways headquarters, and confirmed up to 600 rail apprenticeship places for 16 to 21 year olds.

On 15 October 2026 the government named the site of the Great British Railways headquarters: Becketwell, in the centre of Derby. Alongside the address came a second announcement — up to 600 rail apprenticeship places for 16 to 21 year olds over the next four years.

What exactly was announced on 15 October?

The Department for Transport revealed that the future headquarters of Great British Railways (GBR) will stand at Becketwell, a brownfield site in the heart of Derby city centre. Construction is expected to begin in early 2027 and be completed by spring 2029. The building will accommodate up to 450 GBR staff, with public transport links and walking routes delivered alongside it by the Department for Transport, Derby City Council and the East Midlands Combined Authority.

The same release carried the second half of the news: up to 600 apprentices aged 16 to 21 will enrol over the next four years on the rail foundation apprenticeship, with the first starters based in Derby.

How much money and how many jobs does this bring?

The government estimates the development will bring about £151 million to the region's economy and hundreds of rail jobs to the city. Separately from the headquarters, a £1 billion contract for a new fleet of trains for the north is being delivered at Alstom's Derby site, supporting hundreds of skilled jobs and apprenticeships of its own.

Ministers describe Derby as Europe's largest rail hub, and both decisions — the headquarters and the fleet — are tied to that.

Who can apply for the 600 apprenticeship places?

The foundation apprenticeship is aimed at people aged 16 to 21. A foundation apprenticeship combines on-the-job experience with a qualification, so you earn while you learn. The government links the intake directly to its Youth Guarantee — the commitment that everyone has the opportunity to earn or learn.

If you claim Universal Credit and are aged 16 to 24, the route to places like these runs through the Youth Guarantee Journey: ask your work coach at the jobcentre or at a Youth Hub. That programme replaced the earlier Youth Offer in June 2026. Apprenticeship vacancies are also published directly on the government's Find an apprenticeship service.

The reason for the intake is stated plainly: fewer than 7% of the railway's workforce is currently under 25. Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden tied the scheme to a £2.5 billion youth employment support package which the government says is creating up to 500,000 opportunities for young people to earn or learn.

What has already changed for passengers?

Great British Railways is being assembled as a single 'directing mind' — track and train under one roof instead of today's split between the infrastructure owner and dozens of operators. Integrated leadership teams of that kind are already running in Anglia, South Eastern and South Western.

What the government counts as delivered so far: fares frozen for the first time in 30 years, 76,000 extra seats a week added across the network, and a new GBR fleet to be built in Britain. The transfer of operators into public ownership continues on schedule — Chiltern Railways moved across on 20 September 2026 and Great Western Railway is due on 13 December 2026.

When will Great British Railways be fully running?

No switch-on date was given. On the current plan the headquarters is ready in spring 2029, while the legal basis for GBR comes from the Railways Bill, introduced in the House of Commons on 5 November 2025. Until then GBR exists as a programme: operators are taken into public ownership one at a time and leadership teams are assembled region by region.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham called the decision "another big step forward"; Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander called it "the biggest shake-up to our railways in a generation". For passengers the practical part so far comes down to two things: frozen fares, and complaints that will gradually land with one organisation rather than several.
