Bowel cancer screening: the free NHS home test kit explained

The NHS posts a free bowel cancer test kit to everyone in England aged 50 to 74, every 2 years. Here is how the FIT kit works, why it matters, and how over-75s can request one.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, and it is far easier to treat when it is caught early. That is why the NHS posts a free testing kit straight to your home — no appointment, no GP visit needed. You do not have to ask for it: the kit simply arrives in the post, and all you have to do is use it.

Who does the NHS send the bowel cancer test to?

Everyone registered with a GP and aged 50 to 74 (50–74) is sent the test automatically. As the NHS puts it, bowel cancer screening is currently offered to people aged 50 to 74 every 2 years. The first kit does not arrive exactly on your 50th birthday, because the programme has only recently expanded down to age 50 and is still being phased in. People who were 50 or 51 when the programme began get their first kit at 52, and those who were older get it at 54. Both posting the kit out and sending it back are free.

How does the FIT home test work?

Inside the envelope is a FIT (faecal immunochemical test) kit. You use a small stick to collect a tiny sample of your poo, seal the tube, and post it back in the prepaid envelope provided. The lab checks the sample for traces of blood you cannot see with the naked eye — an early sign that something in the bowel may need looking at. The whole thing takes a couple of minutes at home, with no trip to a clinic. Full instructions are on the NHS bowel cancer screening page.

Why bother doing the test?

Because early bowel cancer often causes no symptoms at all, and that is exactly when it is easiest to treat. The NHS says the screening programme finds around 100 cancers a week on average. In the year from April 2024 to March 2025, almost 5.2 million people took part. Doctors are especially urging people in their early 50s not to bin the kit: it is this age group that returns the test the least, even though early checks save lives.

What if I already have symptoms?

Screening is for people with no symptoms. If you notice blood in your poo, a lasting change in your bowel habits, tummy pain, unexplained weight loss or constant tiredness, do not wait for a kit in the post — book an appointment with your GP now. These signs are usually caused by something less serious, but they should be checked without delay.

What happens if blood is found?

You will usually get your result within 2 weeks. A positive result does not mean you have cancer: more often the cause is minor, such as a small tear or a polyp. But you will be invited to see a specialist and will usually be offered a colonoscopy — a thin camera used to look inside your bowel — to find out exactly what is going on.

I'm 75 or over — how do I get a kit?

After 74, invitations stop arriving automatically, but you can still be tested every 2 years — you just have to ask. Call the free helpline on 0800 707 6060 and ask for a screening kit. The line is open 9am to 5pm on weekdays. A fuller overview of the programme is on the gov.uk website.
