How to get an NHS dentist in England and what it costs
You do not register with an NHS dentist in England the way you do with a GP: you can ask any practice that has NHS capacity. Here is how to find one, what to do if there are no places, and what treatment costs across the three charge bands.
Thanks for £1
Many people assume you must register with an NHS dentist the way you do with a GP. You do not. There is no registering for the future: at a first visit a practice may ask you to fill in a form, but this does not guarantee NHS care at the same practice next time.
Finding a dentist who takes NHS patients
- Use the NHS "Find an NHS dentist near you" tool.
- Some practices do both NHS and private work — ask specifically for NHS treatment.
- You can contact any NHS dentist for an appointment, routine or with symptoms.
- You may be put on a waiting list.
- Most adults pay for NHS dental appointments.
If nowhere has places, contact your local integrated care board (ICB) — it manages dental services in your area and may tell you where to get seen.

Charges in England are fixed and depend on the complexity band, not the number of items:
- Band 1 — £27.90. Examination, diagnosis and advice, X-rays if needed, fluoride, simple scaling, minor denture or brace adjustments.
- Band 2 — £76.60. Everything in Band 1 plus fillings, root canal, extractions and other surgery, and more extensive denture work.
- Band 3 — £332.10. Everything in Bands 1 and 2 plus crowns, inlays, bridges, dentures, braces and other custom appliances.
Urgent treatment costs £27.90: assessment, X-rays, a temporary filling, removing up to two teeth, draining an abscess. One urgent filling is included; others fall under Band 2.
Payment rules people miss
If a course of treatment spans different bands, you pay only the highest band. Several items in the same band is one charge. And further treatment within 2 months in the same or a lower band is free.
The NHS page marks these as current rates (modified 30 September 2026). Check nhs.uk before your visit, as amounts are reviewed periodically.
