Maternity exemption: free NHS prescriptions and dental care in pregnancy

During pregnancy and for a year after birth in England you are entitled to free NHS prescriptions and free dental treatment — with a maternity exemption certificate (MatEx).

In England you normally pay for NHS prescriptions and dental treatment. But pregnant women and those who have recently given birth are entitled to an exemption — the maternity exemption certificate (MatEx).

What does the certificate give?

It entitles you to free NHS prescriptions and serves as proof of entitlement to free NHS dental treatment. For a family this is a real saving: a standard prescription in England is charged, and so are dental visits.

Who qualifies?

You qualify if, at the time you apply, you are pregnant or have given birth in the last 12 months. If the pregnancy ended in miscarriage or stillbirth, you can keep using the certificate until it expires.

How do you apply?

The application is completed for you by a midwife, doctor or health visitor — once they have confirmed the pregnancy. If the digital service is used, the certificate comes by email; otherwise a paper one is posted within 10 working days. Details are on the NHSBSA site.

How long does it last?

It is backdated to one month before the application date and ends 12 months after your due date or the baby's birth. If the baby arrives later than expected, you can contact NHSBSA and, with the birth certificate, extend the expiry date. If you pay for a prescription or dental visit before the certificate arrives, keep receipts: if you were entitled, the cost can sometimes be refunded. Check the expiry date — using an expired certificate is not allowed and can bring a penalty.

How does a MatEx differ from other grounds for free prescriptions?

In England prescriptions are free on several grounds: age (under 16 and 60+), pregnancy and the year after birth (MatEx), certain conditions (MedEx), and getting some benefits. A MatEx is the "maternity" exemption, and it additionally proves entitlement to free NHS dental care, which a MedEx does not. If you have more than one ground, any valid one is enough.

What if you paid before the certificate arrived?

If you paid for a prescription or treatment while entitled but without the certificate in hand, keep the receipt and refund form (at the pharmacy, an FP57 — issued only at the time of payment). If you were entitled, the cost can usually be refunded within a set time. And remember: you must not tick "exempt" without a valid certificate — the NHS can issue a penalty for a false claim.
