Many newcomers put off seeing a doctor, assuming they need "papers" first. They do not. The NHS states plainly: you can register with or change a GP surgery in England for free, and you do not need ID, proof of address or proof of immigration status.
What you actually need
Just basic details: name, date of birth and address. An NHS number helps but is not required.

- Online. Find a surgery by postcode on the NHS website, pick one offering online registration and fill in the form — about 15 minutes per person.
- Via the NHS App. If you already have a GP, you can switch in the app: you need not tell your current surgery — the new one notifies it.
- In person or on paper. Go in and fill a paper form, or download it from the NHS registration site.
Timing and key points
You will be told when you are registered — usually within 5 days of the surgery getting your details, sometimes longer. Temporary registration is possible for up to 3 months. If a surgery refuses you, it must explain why in writing within 14 days.
