Speed awareness course in the UK: when it is offered instead of a fine and points

Speeding carries a fine from £100 and 3 points, but police sometimes offer a course instead. Here are the conditions and amounts, from GOV.UK.

Speeding in the UK is punished with a fine and penalty points, but in some cases the police offer an educational speed awareness course instead of a fine and points. It depends on the circumstances of the offence and your history.

What is the minimum fine for speeding?

GOV.UK states that the minimum penalty for speeding is a fine of £100 and 3 points on your licence. This applies if you accept the offence under a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).

How large can a court fine be?

If you contest the offence and the court finds you guilty, the fine can be higher and carry more points. It is usually a percentage of your weekly income — up to £1,000, or up to £2,500 if you were speeding on a motorway.

When is a course offered instead of a fine?

A course may be offered instead of the £100 fine and 3 points if two conditions are met: the police decide it is appropriate for your offence, and you have not attended such a course in the previous 3 years. The decision rests with the police — a driver has no right to “choose the course”.

Why is a course better than a fine with points?

By taking the course you avoid points on your licence. That matters because reaching 12 points in 3 years usually means a driving ban, and new drivers (in the first 2 years after passing) have their licence revoked at just 6 points. Points also push up your car insurance. A course is normally paid for, and the cost depends on the area and provider.

How does the course work and what to note?

The course lasts a few hours and runs in person or online; it covers the causes and consequences of speeding. The offer comes after the offence is recorded — follow the instructions in the notice and meet the response deadlines. If you are not offered a course or do not meet the conditions, the options are the FPN or court.

How long do points stay on your licence and what do they risk?

Penalty points normally count towards totals for 3 years, though they stay on the licence record for longer. Reaching 12 points in 3 years usually leads to disqualification (a ban) of at least six months. That is why the chance to take a course instead of points is especially valuable for drivers who already have endorsements.

What to do if you get a speeding notice?

Usually you first get a “Notice of Intended Prosecution” and a request to say who was driving (you must return it within the set deadline — this matters). You are then offered an option: an FPN (fine and points), a course (if you qualify) or court. Read the deadlines in the letters carefully and do not ignore them: failing to say who was driving is itself an offence with a fine and points.
