Tattoos, Botox and fillers — 18 only: what the law bans
If you have teenagers, this matters: tattoos, and Botox and cosmetic fillers, are legally for over-18s only. Here's exactly what is banned and the exceptions.

Age limits in the beauty world are not salon policy — they are the law. They cover both tattoos and injectable cosmetics.
Tattoos — 18 and over
Under the Tattooing of Minors Act 1969, tattooing anyone under 18 is an offence; the only exception is where it is done for medical reasons by a qualified medical practitioner (or under their direction). Parental consent makes no difference — an under-18 cannot be tattooed. The artist has a defence if they took reasonable steps and reasonably believed the customer was an adult — which is why you may be asked for ID.
Botox and fillers — 18 and over (in England)
The Botulinum Toxin and Cosmetic Fillers (Children) Act 2021 made it an offence in England to administer botulinum toxin (Botox) or a cosmetic filler to anyone under 18 for a cosmetic purpose. The exceptions are where the procedure is carried out by a registered medical practitioner, or by a health professional acting on a doctor's direction. As with tattoos, a «reasonable age-check» defence applies — you may be asked to prove you are 18.
What it means in practice
If a salon offers a teenager a tattoo, Botox or fillers «quietly» or «with parental consent», that is breaking the law, not providing a service. Breaches carry a fine. When choosing an artist or clinic, being asked your age and for ID is normal — it is a legal requirement, not fussiness.
