Where to buy the food you grew up with in London: Russian, Ukrainian, Polish and Baltic shops

Lists of "Russian shops in London" have been circulating for years, and half the addresses in them belong to places that closed. We did it differently: a shop is included only where the address is confirmed either by its own website or by the government's Food Standards Agency register, which records the date of every food business's last hygiene inspection. A 2026 inspection date is solid evidence that the shop was trading very recently.

The list is in two parts. First, shops with their own website, where address, phone and hours are confirmed. Second, shops without one: the address comes from the government register, and we do not publish phone numbers or hours because there is nowhere to verify them. Before a long journey, call or check the map.

Which shops are confirmed by their own websites?

Kalinka

35 Queensway, London W2 4QJ, between Queensway and Bayswater stations. kalinkastore.com, +44 7752 942292.

Worth the trip for: the counter of black and red caviar, borodinsky bread, and prepared food — syrniki, vareniki, borsch.

Delivery: £13 on orders over £50, plus free click-and-collect. Caveat: the shop has two websites with different opening hours on each. Call before travelling.

Dacha — four shops

A small chain with a strong emphasis on caviar and delicatessen, its own prepared food and Georgian wines. One site: dachadeli.com.

Berezka

Worth the trip for: the fish counter — salted, smoked and cured fish, and caviar. The shop describes itself as the oldest Russian grocer in London and has recently expanded and refitted.

Delivery: London only — its own courier by phone, and Deliveroo.

Elka London

Worth the trip for: Lithuanian, Latvian and Ukrainian products, and a separate display of Armenian, Georgian and Moldovan drinks. A family shop of more than 25 years.

Ukrainian Shop Albina

Worth the trip for: trading since 2005. Alongside groceries and frozen food there are preserves, sweets and baking, plus textiles and gifts. The same owners run a Ukrainian restaurant next door at 239 Barking Road.

Mleczko Polish Delicatessen

23–25 Uxbridge Road, W12 8LH, Shepherd's Bush. mleczkodelikatesy.com, 020 8932 4487. Mon–Sat 07:00–22:00, Sun 09:00–21:00.

Worth the trip for: the chain has its own bakery and its own butcher — sausages and cured meats sold loose. Mleczko has other London branches; the addresses are on the chain's site.

Ukrainian Foods London

Not a shop but a kitchen with collection: 105 Eade Road, N4 1TJ. foodua.uk, +44 7493 423898.

Worth it for: hand-made vareniki, pelmeni and chebureki, frozen immediately. There is a gluten-free menu and catering. London delivery from £60, free over £149.

Which shops are confirmed by the government register?

These shops have no website of their own, so we give no phone numbers or hours — there is nowhere to check them, and we will not publish what we cannot verify. The addresses come from the Food Standards Agency register; the date in brackets is the last hygiene inspection, which shows how current the record is.

The last four lines carry inspections from 2024 and 2025. The shops certainly existed, but time has passed: call or check the map before travelling.

What if you cannot get there — is there delivery?

Of the shops here, only Dacha has confirmed nationwide parcel delivery — £16.99, one to two days, nothing frozen. Kalinka delivers but does not describe its area on the site, so ask by phone. Berezka and Ukrainian Foods deliver within London only.

Separately, Babushka Deli has been shipping nationwide since 2016 — but it is not a London shop; it is in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. Fine as an online option, no use as somewhere to call in on the way home.

What is not on the list, and why?

We left out several places that appear repeatedly in other people's roundups.

"Slavyanka" is the commonest error. A shop of that name is indeed in London — the one in Ontario, Canada. There is no entry in the UK register.

"Russian Gastronom" has no working website and nothing resembling it in the London register. Most likely closed.

Lituanica retail shops in London: their addresses circulate in directories, but not a single Lituanica outlet appears in the London Food Standards Agency register. That is a strong sign the retail side has closed; the company itself operates in Barking as a wholesaler to businesses.

Gurmani is a Georgian restaurant, not a shop. Georgia's Kitchen & Deli is registered as manufacturing and packing, with no confirmed retail format. Rodyna and Delikatesy Smaczek both exist — but the first is in Manchester and the second in Basingstoke.
