Support for veterans in Britain: card, compensation and help

If you served in the UK armed forces for even one day, the state offers specific rights and support. Here is the essential guidance from official GOV.UK and NHS sources, without the clutter.

What is the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card?

It is a card that proves you served, making it quicker to apply for support as a veteran. It is open to anyone who served in the regulars or reserves of the Royal Navy, British Army, RAF or Royal Marines. Leavers get the card in their service-leavers' pack within 6 weeks; those who left before December 2018 apply themselves — online on GOV.UK or by post. The card is accepted as ID when voting and on domestic British Airways and easyJet flights, brings discounts and help with housing and work, and lets you register with a GP as a veteran.

Who else can qualify?

Beyond the regulars and reserves, a Veteran Card may also be open to people who served in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, in the Merchant Navy in support of UK forces, or in certain other groups. Those who served in another country's armed forces do not qualify. Veterans Services help with more than compensation: the move to civilian life (especially for those leaving within two years), benefits, and referrals to other services. The helpline is free, and you can apply online or by post.

What compensation is there?

There are two schemes. The Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) covers injury, illness or death caused by service on or after 6 April 2005. Anything before that falls under the War Pension Scheme. You can claim for both physical and mental health conditions, and you do not need to know which scheme applies. Awards are a tax-free lump sum for pain and suffering and, for serious cases, a monthly Guaranteed Income Payment.

Is there a time limit?

For the AFCS you must claim within 7 years of the earliest of: the incident, the date service made an existing condition worse, first seeking medical advice for an illness, or discharge. There are exceptions — for example if the illness appeared later or ill health stopped you claiming. You do not need a paid representative; free help is available from the Veterans Welfare Service.

Where do you get help?

The Veterans UK / Veterans Services line is 0808 1914 218 (Mon–Fri, 8am–4pm); choose option 6 for Veterans Services. From overseas: +44 1253 866 043. For mental health support in England, the NHS service Op COURAGE provides specialist, free help for veterans, and you can self-refer.

Tip: start with the Veteran Card — it unlocks the other services and proves your status. Then, if you have a service injury or illness, apply to the AFCS or War Pension without letting the seven-year limit slip.

Thanks for £1If this information was useful and came in time, press the heart. Payment goes through PayPal, with nothing to choose and nothing to fill in, and it pays for the newsroom.
