How to cancel a recurring card payment
Recurring card payments can be stopped without the company's agreement — just tell your bank. We explain the law, how to cancel and what to do if money is still taken.
Thanks for £1
A recurring card payment (a continuous payment authority, or CPA) can be stopped — and you do not need the company's agreement. The basis is the Payment Services Regulations 2017.
What the law says
A payment is authorised only if you consented to it. Consent to a series of payments can be withdrawn at any time; after that, future payments in the series are no longer authorised (reg 67). So you can tell your bank or card issuer to stop taking them.

- Tell both the company and your bank (contacting the bank is enough — the company's agreement is not required).
- Do it in good time, before the next payment is due.
- Keep a record of when you asked.
If money is still taken
If a payment goes out after you withdrew consent, it is an unauthorised payment: ask your bank for a refund.
An important difference
A CPA (recurring card payment) is not the same as a Direct Debit (cancelled through your bank and covered by the Direct Debit Guarantee) or a standing order (which you control yourself). For a card CPA, your bank must stop the payments when you ask.
Remember
Stopping the payment does not cancel the contract: if you owe money under a subscription or credit agreement, the debt remains — sort the contract out separately, or you may face charges.
