EV chargepoint grants: £500 and a 2027 deadline

Renters and flat owners get 75% of the cost of installing a charging socket, up to £500. A separate scheme covers households with only on-street parking. Employers and landlords are funded too. All of it runs to 31 March 2027.

The main argument against an electric car in Britain sounds the same from everyone: "I have nowhere to charge, I rent." Meanwhile the government pays three quarters of the cost of installing a socket — including for renters and for people with only on-street parking. These schemes run until 31 March 2027, and this is the final extended year.

How much does the government give towards home charging?

For renters and flat owners: 75% off the cost of buying and installing a socket, up to £500. You can apply if you either own and live in a flat, or rent and live in any residential property. One condition: private off-street parking.

The important detail is that the grant follows where you live, not what you own. A renter in Britain has the same claim to it as an owner.

What if your parking is only on the street?

There is a separate scheme, also up to £500. It is designed for people with no off-street space, and the money goes towards a cross-pavement solution: a gully or channel that carries the cable under the pavement instead of across it.

That addresses exactly the problem that made half of Britain's streets look unusable for electric cars: a cable over the pavement is a hazard for pedestrians and a reason for the council to say no. You can live in a property you own or rent.

What employers, landlords and schools can get

Workplace Charging Scheme — up to £500 per socket, for up to 40 sockets across all a company's sites. Open to businesses, charities and public sector organisations.

Landlords — also up to £500 per socket, with a wider limit: up to 200 sockets. Private landlords, registered providers of social housing, public sector bodies and property management companies acting for a landlord can all apply.

A separate line covers state-funded schools and education institutions, where the rate is four times higher: up to £2,000 per socket, for up to 40 sockets.

The implication for a renter is simple: if charging at home is awkward, the state will also pay your employer or your landlord. That figure is a good way to open the conversation.

The grant on the car itself needs no application

Some zero emission vehicles qualify for the Electric Car Grant. It works differently from the chargepoint grants: the seller includes the discount in the purchase price, so there is no form and no waiting for a refund. The government maintains the list of eligible models, and it is worth checking before you buy rather than after.

What changed in April 2026

From 1 April 2026 the OZEV schemes were restructured: the portfolio was simplified to five programmes and the rates changed. They have been extended for a final year, to 31 March 2027. If installing a charger is on your "someday" list, this is the case where someday has a deadline.

Check the conditions on your own scheme's page before applying: each has its own requirements on property, parking and installer.
