Where to get a free SIM card in the UK: data, calls and texts

Britain runs the National Databank — free SIM cards with data, calls and texts for people who cannot afford to stay connected. Who qualifies, how much data you get and where to collect one.

Being left without mobile internet in Britain means you cannot apply for a job, log in to your bank or book a doctor's appointment. To prevent that, the National Databank scheme hands out free SIM cards with data, calls and texts to people who cannot afford to stay connected. Here is who qualifies and how to get one.

What is the National Databank?

It is a national "data bank": the charity Good Things Foundation, together with mobile operators, gives out free SIM cards and monthly top-ups to people in "data poverty" — those who cannot afford internet access for essential needs, such as applying for a job online or banking online. The cards are handed out not directly but through local Digital Inclusion Hubs — most often libraries and community centres.

Who can get a free SIM card?

You qualify if you are aged 18 or over and live in a low-income household. You may also qualify if you have no or insufficient internet at home or away from home and cannot afford a contract or top-up. Refugees can also receive a SIM card and free data. You will be asked to prove your age when you collect it.

How much data do you get?

It depends on the operator. According to Good Things Foundation: Vodafone gives 40GB of data plus unlimited calls and texts, preloaded and refreshing every 30 days for six months; O2 (Virgin Media O2) gives 25GB with free calls and texts for up to 12 months, with a monthly top-up code sent by text; Three gives 24GB of data but with no refresh and no free calls or texts. For Vodafone and Three the SIM works as soon as you insert it; for O2 you activate a monthly code.

Where and how do you get one?

Find your nearest hub on the Good Things Foundation map and go there to speak to a library or centre worker. Call ahead, as stock changes. With an O2 SIM you can keep your number by porting it to O2; for O2 queries call 0344 809 0222 (or 4445 from an O2 phone) and quote "National Databank". Separately, mobile operators run schemes for refugees and new arrivals — ask about these at support centres and charities.
