Dart Charge: how to pay for the Dartford Crossing and avoid a fine
The Dartford Crossing on the M25 is chargeable from 6am to 10pm every day. A car costs £3.50 and must be paid by midnight the day after, or a fine follows. Motorcycles are free.
Thanks for £1
The Dartford Crossing links Kent and Essex on the eastern arm of the M25 — two tunnels and the QE II bridge over the Thames. There are no barriers or toll booths: payment is electronic only, through the Dart Charge scheme. That is exactly why many drivers, especially those passing through, forget to pay and end up with a fine.
When is the crossing chargeable?
The charge applies from 6am to 10pm every day, including weekends and bank holidays. Between 10pm and 6am the crossing is free. The time is set by when you cross.
How much does it cost?
The charge depends on your vehicle. Motorcycles, mopeds and quad bikes are free. Cars (including with a trailer, motorhomes and minibuses with 9 or fewer seats) cost £3.50 for a one-off payment, or £2.80 from a pre-pay account. Two-axle vans and goods vehicles cost £4.20 (£3.60 pre-pay). Vehicles with more than two axles, including larger lorries, cost £8.40 (£7.20 pre-pay).
By when must you pay?
You must pay by midnight the day after you cross. You can also pay in advance — a one-off payment is valid for 12 months and needs no account. If you use the crossing regularly, an account is cheaper: pre-pay (a topped-up balance) gives a discount of up to 20%, while pay as you go takes the money automatically at midnight the day after.
How do you pay?
You can pay online at GOV.UK, in cash at Payzone shops, by post, or by phone to the Dart Charge contact centre on 0300 300 0120. For automatic payment, the simplest option is an account with a payment card attached.
What happens if you don't pay?
If you miss the deadline you get a fine — a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN). So if you have crossed for the first time and are unsure whether you paid, it is safest to pay online straight away. Vehicles that are exempt from vehicle tax because of a disability are checked automatically, but it is worth registering the exemption in advance to avoid a wrongly issued fine.
