Adults in England can gain a free, nationally recognised level 3 qualification, with the government paying the fees. Here is who qualifies by age and income, and how to enrol.

Adults in England can gain a fully funded, nationally recognised qualification through Free Courses for Jobs, part of the government’s wider Skills for Life programme. The state pays the course fees in full for people who meet the conditions. As the official guidance on gov.uk puts it: “If you’re eligible, you will not have to pay for your qualification.” It is one of the clearest routes for working-age adults to retrain without taking on debt.
Who can take a free level 3 course?
You must be aged 19 or over. The guidance states: “If you’re aged 19 or over, you could apply for a free” course. The second condition is about pay and work — you need to earn below a set threshold or be unemployed. The offer originally targeted adults who did not already hold a full level 3 qualification, but access is now broader. Local rules on maximum earnings and on existing qualifications can differ between areas, so it is worth checking the exact criteria with the college or training provider before you apply.

Yes. To study for free you must either be unemployed or earn under the threshold. The page says you qualify if you “earn below £25,750 or are unemployed.” People claiming Universal Credit can take part too: the guidance notes that “Many Universal Credit claimants can take full-time training for up to 16 weeks and continue to claim benefit.” On top of the free tuition, you may be able to get help with childcare, travel and other costs through learner support, which can make attending a course realistic for people on a tight budget.
Which courses and careers are covered?
Free level 3 qualifications are available across a wide range of sectors. They include accounting and finance, health and social care, digital, engineering, building and construction, agriculture, business management, childcare and early years, hospitality and catering, science, mathematics and statistics, teaching, transport, and warehousing and distribution, among others. In construction, engineering and manufacturing, some level 2 courses are free as well. The full list of approved qualifications is published on gov.uk and updated regularly, so check the current list before committing to a course.
How do you enrol?
Start by finding a course through the National Careers Service. The guidance advises: “Use the National Careers Service course finder to see which courses are available for free in your local area.” You can set a travel distance, and some courses run part-time or online so you can study around work or caring responsibilities. Then contact the college or training provider, confirm the qualification is on the scheme, check the admissions criteria and apply. Enrolment is handled by the providers themselves, not by ONLYWAY NEWS. See the official Free Courses for Jobs page and the National Careers Service.
How do Skills Bootcamps fit in?
If you do not need a full qualification, look at Skills Bootcamps, a related strand of the same skills programme. These are “flexible courses of up to 16 weeks,” developed with local employers, that the government says fast-track learners towards an interview with a local employer. Together, Free Courses for Jobs and Skills Bootcamps give adults several routes to retrain and change career without paying for tuition.
