Car impounded in the UK: how much it costs to get it back, day by day

Police pound: £192 for the tow and £26 a day. A London council pound: £280, the ticket and £55 a day. Seven working days to show your documents — and about two weeks before an unclaimed car is disposed of, with the bill surviving it.

A car disappears from the kerb for one of three reasons: the police seized it, the council towed it, or DVLA took it for unpaid tax. Who took it decides what you pay and how fast the bill grows — and in every case the meter is already running, so the expensive mistake is not the tow, it is the week you spend deciding what to do.

How much is the impound fee?

For a police seizure in England and Wales — typically no insurance, no licence, or dangerous parking — the charges for an ordinary car are set by a government table: £192 for the removal, £26 for every day in the pound, and £96 on top if the car is never collected and goes for disposal. Heavier, loaded or damaged vehicles cost more. In Scotland the current table is £190–£192 plus £25–£26 a day.

A council tow in London for a parking contravention is dearer: £280 for the removal, the parking ticket itself (£45–£80), and £55 a day of storage from the day after removal. A car left a week costs more than many cars are worth — which is exactly why pounds fill up with abandoned ones.

Where is the car, and who do you call?

If the police took it, the officer tells you at the roadside or a letter arrives at the keeper’s address, naming the pound and the deadline. In London, a car that vanished from a parking spot is found through TRACE — the free lookup by registration number that says which pound a towed vehicle went to; outside London, ring the council. If the car had no road tax, it may be DVLA’s contractors: their clamp or notice on the spot says so, and the release route runs through taxing the car plus DVLA’s own fees, which rise once the car moves from the street to their pound.

What do you need to get it released?

Money and paper, and the paper is the usual stumble. After a police seizure you must show a valid driving licence and insurance that covers you to drive the car out of the pound — and many ordinary policies exclude exactly that, so there is a market of short impound-release policies; check your own certificate before buying one. Add proof you own or keep the car: the V5C log book, or the insurance schedule. A council pound wants proof of ownership plus proof of your address, and the names must match. Fees are paid at the pound, card or cash, before the barrier opens.

How long before the car is disposed of?

Fast. After a police seizure you normally have seven working days to come forward with the documents, and a car nobody claims can be disposed of or sold after about two weeks — the storage and removal charges survive the car, so doing nothing buys you a bill and no vehicle. Council pounds keep cars longer, but the £55 days make waiting its own punishment.

The tow was wrong — can you get the money back?

Yes, but collect first, argue second. For a council tow you pay, take the car, and then make representations against the ticket and the removal; win, and the fees come back. Waiting in the pound «until the appeal is decided» only grows the storage bill, and the appeal does not stop the clock. A police seizure is harder to unwind: the charges stand unless the seizure itself was unlawful.

What stops this happening again?

Three boring checks: tax, MOT and insurance against your registration on GOV.UK take a minute, and a continuous insurance policy — cars flagged uninsured are seized from an automatic camera hit, no officer’s judgement involved. If a car is going to sit unused, declare it off the road properly instead of letting the tax lapse: we set out how a SORN works, and how to come off one, separately: SORN: taking a car off the road and the tax refund.
