Free English with a native speaker: how Russian speakers can find a language partner
Tandem, HelloTalk, ConversationExchange and Dickinson College's non-profit Mixxer can connect Russian speakers with English speakers learning Russian. We compare the free options, age rules, safety risks and a practical 30/30 exchange format.
Thanks for £1
Checked on 10 October 2026. A Russian speaker does not have to pay for every conversation practice session. In a language exchange, an English speaker helps with English and receives help with Russian in return. It is not free tutoring: it is an equal agreement, typically 30 minutes in each language.
Important: a profile's native speaker label is usually self-declared. It does not prove identity, teaching qualifications or a British accent. To look for British English, filter for native English, United Kingdom and learning Russian, then use a short introductory conversation to check whether your goals match.

Tandem offers language, location and interest filters and states that the community is for language learning, not dating or commercial offers. HelloTalk provides chats, Voice Rooms and Moments, and its safety guidance warns against money requests, suspicious links, unexpected QR codes and pressure to move off-platform. ConversationExchange works in a browser, has country and time-zone filters, and is not a dating or advertising service. The Mixxer is an entirely free, non-profit project hosted by Dickinson College where every user is both student and teacher.
A profile that gets useful replies
Native Russian speaker, learning British English. I can help with conversational Russian and everyday vocabulary. Looking for a weekly 30/30 voice exchange. Language learning only, no dating.
Add your level, three conversation interests, time zone and two possible time slots. Moscow is UTC+3 throughout the year. It is two hours ahead of London until the UK's clock change on 25 October 2026, and three hours ahead afterwards.
A 60-minute exchange that works
- Use five minutes to agree one topic and the type of correction wanted.
- Speak English for 25 minutes while the English speaker notes three to five useful corrections.
- Switch roles and speak Russian for 25 minutes.
- Use the final five minutes to review vocabulary and set the next topic.
A weekly fixed appointment is more effective than many random chats. Keep corrections in a shared document or notebook, but do not grant a stranger access to personal email or files.
Safety rules
- Stay on the platform at first and use block/report tools.
- Never send money, crypto, investment funds, passport details, bank information or an SMS code.
- Do not scan unexpected QR codes or install an unknown application.
- Be cautious when someone quickly pushes communication into a private messenger.
- End the contact if a clearly educational profile receives unwanted romantic or sexual messages.
Minors should use only an age-appropriate service with a parent or guardian involved. Tandem requires users to be at least 16; ConversationExchange and The Mixxer are for adults; HelloTalk excludes children under 12 and restricts minor accounts.
Availability in Russia
The official pages were accessible from the UK when checked, but website and app-store availability in Russia can change. Check on your own device and do not pay an intermediary merely to register. ConversationExchange and The Mixxer are browser-based; Tandem and HelloTalk are primarily app-led.
A language partner is not a substitute for a qualified teacher, exam preparation or a formal certificate. But regular speaking practice and listening can cost £0 when both partners contribute equally. Readers already in Britain can also use our guide to free and funded ESOL courses.
Thanks for £1If this information was useful and came in time, press the heart. Payment goes through PayPal, with nothing to choose and nothing to fill in, and it pays for the newsroom.
