MOT: when your car needs one, what it may cost and the fine without it
The first MOT is due by the car's third birthday, then every year. Here are the legal maximum fees, the fine of up to £1,000 for driving without one, the only two journeys that are allowed, and the one-month rule that protects your renewal date.

The MOT is the annual check on a vehicle's safety and emissions. Without a valid certificate you cannot legally drive and you cannot renew vehicle tax, and the fine runs to a thousand pounds. Here are the rules as GOV.UK sets them out.
When the first test is due
An ordinary car or motorcycle needs its first MOT by the third anniversary of registration. After that it is due every year, by the anniversary of the last test.

What it may cost
The law sets a maximum fee. A garage may charge less but not more, and no VAT is added.
A car with up to eight passenger seats (class 4) is £54.85. A motor caravan is also £54.85. A motorcycle up to 200cc (class 1) and over 200cc (class 2) is £29.65. A private passenger vehicle or ambulance with 9 to 12 seats is £57.30, with 13 to 16 seats £59.55, and with more than 16 seats £80.65.
If you are quoted more than the maximum for your class, that is a reason to go elsewhere.
The fine, and the only two exceptions
Driving without a valid MOT carries a fine of up to £1,000. Driving or parking on a public road after the certificate has expired can lead to prosecution.
There are exactly two exceptions: driving to or from repairs, and driving to a pre-arranged MOT test. No other errand counts.
Tax and SORN
You cannot renew vehicle tax while the MOT has expired — the system will not let you. If the vehicle will be off the road for a while, register it as SORN: no tax is due, but it must not be driven on a public road.
The one-month rule
You can test early, but the timing matters. Test no earlier than one month minus a day before the current certificate expires and the renewal date is preserved. If it expires on 15 May, the earliest test date is 16 April and the new certificate still runs to 15 May the following year.
Test before that window and the date moves: the new expiry becomes one year minus a day from the pass date. Pass on 14 April and cover ends on 13 April the next year, losing you almost a month.
How to check and not forget
MOT history and the expiry date can be checked online on GOV.UK, along with past advisories and the mileage recorded at each test — useful when buying a used car. GOV.UK also offers free MOT reminders.
Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland has its own rules and booking process. If your last test was there and your next is in Great Britain, the renewal date runs from the Great Britain test.
What to do
Check the expiry date and sign up for a reminder. Book inside the one-month-minus-a-day window so you do not lose cover. Compare the quoted price with the legal maximum for your class before you pay. And do not let it lapse: an expired MOT blocks your tax and turns every journey into a fine waiting to happen.
