Oxford Street closes to traffic

The central section of London's main shopping street is now closed around the clock to cars, buses, taxis and cycles. Here are the zone boundaries, new bus arrangements and delivery hours for businesses.

From 26 October 2026, Oxford Street between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street is completely traffic-free. The restriction operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It affects passengers, drivers, taxi and private-hire services, cyclists, couriers and businesses in central London.

Who can no longer enter

Private cars, buses, black cabs, private-hire vehicles, cycles, e-bikes, e-scooters and pedicabs cannot enter the zone. The ban applies 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Emergency vehicles may enter at any time. Mobility scooters remain permitted. Blue Badge concessions do not apply inside the new traffic-free area.

Bus route changes

Routes 7, 94, N7, N113 and N137 now terminate at Marble Arch or have lost the section between Marble Arch and Oxford Circus. Routes 98, 139, 390, N98 and N207 are diverted around the traffic-free section.

Dozens of other day and night routes have stop changes. Check the TfL Journey Planner before travelling: your usual stop may have moved to Regent Street, Wigmore Street, Henrietta Place, Cavendish Place or Marble Arch. Alternative stops are approximately 200 metres from the traffic-free area.

Tube and rail services are unaffected. Nearby stations include Marble Arch, Bond Street, Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road. Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road provide step-free access.

Advice for taxis and drivers

Passengers cannot be picked up or dropped off inside the zone. Taxi ranks remain within about 100 metres, on the open ends of Oxford Street and surrounding roads including Orchard Street, Duke Street and Great Portland Street.

Several north–south roads remain open as crossings, including Duke Street, Regent Street, New Bond Street and Great Portland Street. Road layouts and short closures may still change while construction continues, so drivers should follow signs and allow extra time.

How deliveries now work

Businesses have a delivery and servicing window from midnight to 07:00. Vehicles must use approved access routes. Drivers must be carrying out genuine loading or unloading and should not stop or leave a vehicle unattended beyond what the job requires.

Stopping for another reason can result in a Penalty Charge Notice even during the permitted hours. After 07:00, vehicles may not enter. Businesses should agree new times with couriers, waste collectors, repair services and suppliers and share TfL's official access map with them.

What to check before travelling

  1. Plan the journey again using TfL, even if the route used to be familiar.
  2. Do not expect to ride through the closed section on a cycle or scooter.
  3. Choose a meeting point on a nearby street for a taxi or private-hire pickup.
  4. If receiving goods, book arrival before 07:00 and confirm the approved access route.
  5. Watch for temporary barriers while public-realm works continue.

The change applies only to central London and the specific section between Orchard Street and Great Portland Street. Checked against official TfL information on 26 October 2026.
