In London, fruit and veg are cheapest not in supermarkets but at street markets and local greengrocers.

Street markets — the cheapest

Local markets often sell veg in 'bowls' for £1–£2. Well-known cheap markets: Ridley Road (Dalston), Walthamstow, Brixton, Shepherd's Bush, Queen's Market (Upton Park), Surrey Street (Croydon), Watney Market, Chrisp Street (Poplar). Bring cash and a bag.

Budget supermarkets

Aldi and Lidl are usually noticeably cheaper than the big chains on basic fruit and veg.

Local greengrocers

Turkish, Kurdish and Asian food shops often beat supermarkets on price and freshness, especially herbs and seasonal veg.

End-of-day discounts

Near closing, market traders cut prices on what's left. Supermarkets put yellow 'reduced' stickers on in the evening.

Season and 'wonky' veg

Seasonal produce is cheaper. Boxes of 'wonky' fruit and veg (odd shape, same quality) are another way to save.
