UK announces further investment in AI firms and public R&D procurement

HM Treasury has announced an additional £60 million for the Sovereign AI Fund and a separate £60 million for its AI R&D procurement scheme. The package also includes £30 million for local AI partnerships. The announcement does not set new application rules or deadlines.

United Kingdom. On 24 October 2026, HM Treasury set out planned AI investment ahead of the next Budget. The most relevant parts for businesses are an additional £60 million for the Sovereign AI Fund to invest directly in promising UK AI companies and a separate additional £60 million for its government AI R&D procurement scheme. These are different funding routes, not grants already awarded to every company.

Who could benefit?

The Sovereign AI Fund plans to expand into physical and industrial AI, including robotics, autonomous systems and advanced manufacturing. Extra funding for its procurement scheme is intended for solutions in health and care, cyber security, and safe AI adoption. Sovereign AI describes its procurement scheme as pre-commercial research, testing and pilots: these are contracts, not unconditional grants.

The Treasury also announced £30 million to start local AI partnerships with Mayoral Strategic Authorities. These are intended to bring councils, businesses, universities and colleges together, including support for SMEs and workers' skills. A separate £15 million AI Challenge Prize is planned, with the first award targeting AI solutions for health problems. The package has a UK-wide ambition, while some facilities and initiatives are tied to particular places, including Edinburgh and Manchester.

Other figures do not represent an open cash offer

The package also includes £165 million for a National AI Biosecurity Initiative, an additional £120 million for the AI Security Institute, £60 million for a National Cyber Shield, including a £25 million challenge fund, and £18 million for an advanced chip-design academy. The £25 million is part of the £60 million and must not be added to it as a separate allocation. Up to £200 million in model credits offered by private companies is also not a direct government cash payment to businesses.

What should a business do now?

AI developers can compare their products with Sovereign AI's areas of interest and monitor its official website and specific procurement notices. SMEs outside the AI sector should wait for details of any local partnership in their area. The Treasury's 24 October announcement does not provide a new application deadline, a separate competition link for these extra allocations, or a funding guarantee. Do not treat the announced sums as approved support in a business plan. The government presented the package as part of the coming Budget; check the final terms once published.
