Where to get free food in the UK: food banks and how to get help
Food banks in Britain give out free food parcels to last a few days, but almost always by referral (a voucher). Who can get one, what is in the parcel and how to find your nearest food bank.

If you have run out of money for food, food banks in Britain can help — centres that give out a free parcel of food to last a few days. But you usually cannot just walk in and take food: almost everywhere you need a voucher (a referral). Here is who issues one, what is in the parcel and how to find your nearest centre.
Do you need a referral to use a food bank?
Usually yes. As Citizens Advice explains, a referral (voucher) is required for all food banks in the Trussell Trust network. Some independent centres, such as church-run ones, will help without one — check with your local food bank first. You can get a referral for yourself and for family members you live with, including your partner.

Vouchers are issued by organisations that can see your situation. These include Citizens Advice (usually after a short advice appointment), as well as your GP, housing association or social worker. Your local council can explain how to get a referral and may help through its welfare assistance scheme or crisis payments.
What is in a food parcel?
A parcel is designed to last at least three days and consists mainly of long-life food; toiletries are sometimes added. Always tell staff about allergies and dietary needs. If you live in a rural area and cannot afford to travel, or you are ill or disabled, some centres can deliver. You need a new referral for each visit.
How do you find your nearest food bank?
You can check the address of a Trussell Trust food bank on their website, and the easiest way to get a referral is through your local Citizens Advice or council — they can also point you to independent centres. Food bank help is meant for a crisis: it is support for a difficult period, not a permanent source of groceries.
