Voluntary National Insurance: how to fill gaps and boost your pension

The full new State Pension needs 35 qualifying years. If your National Insurance record has gaps, you can sometimes fill them with voluntary contributions — here are the 2026/27 rates, deadlines and pitfalls.

The amount of the new State Pension in the UK depends not on how much you earned but on the number of "qualifying years" in your National Insurance (NI) record. If that record has gaps — years with no contributions and no credits — your pension may fall short of the full rate. In some cases you can fill a gap with voluntary contributions. Here is who should consider it, how much it costs and the deadlines.

What is a qualifying year and how many do you need?

A qualifying year is a tax year in which you paid National Insurance as an employee or self-employed person, or received credits (for example through certain benefits or caring). To get the full new State Pension you usually need 35 qualifying years. To get any new State Pension at all you normally need at least 10 years. GOV.UK states plainly: "you will need 35 qualifying years to get the full rate of new State Pension." The full rate of the new State Pension is currently £241.30 a week.

Why pay voluntary contributions?

Voluntary contributions let you fill gaps and "top up" missing years. GOV.UK lists the typical situations where it makes sense: you are close to State Pension age and short of years; you do not expect to reach the years you need during your working life; you were self-employed with annual profits below £7,105; you live outside the UK and want to keep a right to the pension or certain benefits; or you are not eligible for National Insurance credits.

How much does a voluntary contribution cost in 2026/27?

The rate depends on the class. In tax year 2026/27 a Class 3 voluntary contribution costs £18.40 a week — roughly £957 for a full year. Class 2 (for some self-employed people) costs £3.65 a week and is far cheaper. For past years you pay that year's original rate, not the current one. The exact amount in your own case is shown by the pension forecast service.

Which years can you pay for and what are the deadlines?

The general rule: you can pay for gaps within the past 6 tax years, and the deadline is 5 April each year. GOV.UK gives an example: the deadline to pay for tax year 2025/26 is 5 April 2032. Once the deadline for a particular year passes, you can no longer pay for it — so it is best to check your record early.

When might it not help?

Voluntary contributions do not always increase your pension. GOV.UK warns that if you were "contracted out" in the past (paying lower NI while part of your pension went to a workplace or private scheme), paying may not add anything. You cannot pay voluntary contributions if you have no gaps, if you are a married woman or widow paying the reduced rate, or if the deadline for the year has already passed. That is why you should get a forecast before paying.

How do you check your record and pay?

First check your National Insurance record and pension forecast on GOV.UK — these show which years are missing and whether contributions would add anything. If you are below State Pension age, contact the Future Pension Centre before paying; if you have reached it, contact the Pension Service. You can pay online through the "Check your State Pension forecast" service (up to 5 working days to show), by bank transfer, Direct Debit or at a bank; other methods can take up to 8 weeks.

All figures and rules here come from official GOV.UK pages. Before deciding, check your personal pension forecast: voluntary contributions are real money and only worth paying where they genuinely raise your future pension.
