If an organisation holds inaccurate or incomplete data about you, you can ask it to put this right. This is the 'right to rectification' under data protection rules (UK GDPR).

What you can ask for

To correct inaccurate data and complete incomplete data. It matters: an error in your address, credit file or records can cause real problems.

How to ask

Tell the organisation what is wrong, how to fix it, and give evidence if you have it. You can ask verbally or in writing (writing is safer — you keep a record).

Time and cost

They must respond within one month (up to two more for complex cases, with notice). Usually free; a fee only applies if the request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.

If the data is disputed

The organisation must take reasonable steps to check accuracy, considering your arguments, then either correct it or explain why it thinks the data is right. If it refuses, it should record that you challenged it.

Note: an opinion is harder to challenge as 'inaccurate' if it's clear whose opinion it is — but a factual error can be fixed.

What to do

  1. Send the organisation a request with your evidence.
  2. If it won't correct it without reason, complain to the ICO.
