How to take and move your data

You can get your personal data in a reusable format and even have it moved to another company. This is the 'right to data portability' under data protection rules (UK GDPR).

What you can ask for

• a copy of your data in a machine-readable format (such as a CSV file) to reuse;
• transfer of the data directly to another organisation — where technically feasible.

When it applies

It covers data you provided that is held electronically — including data gathered as you use a service (search history, location, fitness-app data). The processing must be based on your consent or a contract with you.

Time and cost

They must respond within one calendar month (up to two more for complex cases, with notice). It is usually free; a fee only applies if the request is manifestly unfounded or excessive.

How it differs from other rights

Portability is about reusing data and switching provider (bank, streaming, fitness app), not deleting it. Deletion is the separate 'right to be forgotten'.

1. Send the organisation a request and state the format you want.
2. If refused without a lawful reason, complain to the ICO.
