Elizabeth line shut to Heathrow, severe delays on Victoria

Overnight engineering work finished late: the Elizabeth line is not running between Paddington and the Heathrow terminals or out to Reading, with tickets accepted on the Underground. The Victoria line has severe delays from cancelled trains, with tickets accepted on buses and four rail operators. Croydon trams are in the last day of their closure.

Morning: what to avoid

Elizabeth line: no trains between Paddington and Heathrow, or out to Reading. Overnight engineering work finished late. Heathrow has no Elizabeth line service, with delays between Paddington and Abbey Wood eastbound only. Note: TfL is accepting Elizabeth line tickets on the Underground via any reasonable route — take the Piccadilly line to the airport at no extra cost, and allow forty minutes more than usual. From Reading, use GWR trains into Paddington.

Victoria line: severe delays along the whole line from cancelled trains, hitting Walthamstow, Tottenham Hale, Highbury and Brixton. Underground tickets are accepted on London Buses, the Weaver line (Chingford, Enfield Town, Cheshunt) and Suffragette line (Gospel Oak to Barking Riverside), and on Great Northern, Greater Anglia, South Western and Southeastern trains. From the north-east use the Weaver line into Liverpool Street; from the south, national rail into Victoria or London Bridge.

District line: minor delays between Earl's Court and Wimbledon / Ealing Broadway from cancellations. The Central line also serves Ealing Broadway.

Croydon trams — the last day of works. Still no eastbound service Wandle Park to Centrale and no westbound Church Street to Wandle Park; from Thursday the line reopens fully.

Everything else is normal, including Central, Northern, Piccadilly, Jubilee, Circle, the DLR and the Overground lines.

Evening and the journey home

On the Mildmay line (the former North London line) the 22:29 Stratford to Richmond train terminates at Camden Road, arriving 22:49 — tomorrow too, through Thursday 8 October.

Tomorrow after 23:15 the Windrush line closes (the former East London line) between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction / Battersea Park. No replacement buses run at all — TfL asks passengers to use local buses and the Underground. Heading south-west late on Thursday, plan via Clapham Junction on national rail.

Major closures are confirmed for the weekend of 10-11 October: no Circle line between Edgware Road and Aldgate via Victoria; no District line from Edgware Road and Tower Hill to Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond or Wimbledon, with replacement buses and the Mildmay line covering Gunnersbury, Kew Gardens and Richmond; the DLR closed between Stratford International and Woolwich Arsenal, with the Elizabeth line better for Woolwich.

What to do

Flying from Heathrow today: take the Piccadilly line and add forty minutes, since your Elizabeth line ticket is valid on the Underground. On the Victoria line: do not wait on the platform — switch to the Weaver line or national rail straight away, as ticket acceptance covers the fare. The rest of this month's closures are in our guide to tube closures in October.
