The Global Talent visa: no employer, no sponsor — through endorsement

The key difference between the Global Talent visa and the Skilled Worker visa: it does NOT need an employer sponsor or a job offer. You need an endorsement from an approved body in your field — science and research, arts and culture, or digital technology — or a prestigious prize from the eligible list. Here is who qualifies, how it works and what it gives.

Most UK work visas are tied to an employer: no sponsor, no visa; leave the job and you must quickly find a new sponsor. The Global Talent visa is built differently, and that is its strength: it needs neither an employer nor a job offer. Here is who it suits.

Who it is for

People who are already, or could become, a leader in their field. There are three fields: academia or research, arts and culture, and digital technology. You must be at least 18.

The key point: no employer needed

Unlike the Skilled Worker visa, there is no sponsor and no job offer required. With this visa you are free: to work for anyone, be self-employed, change jobs, start your own thing — it is not tied to one employer. That is its main advantage.

Two ways in

The first is a prestigious prize. If you are a named winner of a prize on the official eligible list, you can apply directly, without an endorsement. Other prizes from the same institutions do not count — only those on the list.

The second, main route is endorsement: confirmation from an approved body that you are a leader or potential leader in your field. It is these bodies, not employer companies, that act as the "endorsers" here. Each of the three fields has its own approved body; the current list is on the gov.uk page for your field.

How long, and what next

The visa is granted for up to 5 years at a time, with no limit on total stay — you can keep renewing. After 3 or 5 years (depending on your field and how you applied) you may get indefinite leave to remain (ILR).

What it costs

The application costs £766. On the endorsement route it is paid in two parts: £561 for the endorsement and £205 for the visa. Plus the Immigration Health Surcharge, usually £1,035 a year for each applicant. Amounts can change — check gov.uk.

In short

Global Talent is a visa for leaders in science, the arts and digital technology that does NOT need an employer sponsor. The way in is a prize on the eligible list or an endorsement from an approved body in your field. It is granted for up to 5 years at a time with no overall limit and leads to ILR in 3 to 5 years.
