Where to refill drinking water for free in London: map of 110 fountains

London has a network of 110 drinking fountains and more than 4,000 Refill locations. ONLYWAY.NEWS has compiled the official map, useful central locations and the Mayor’s latest update on the scheme.

You can refill a bottle with free drinking water at London’s public fountain network, created by City Hall and Thames Water, and at cafés, shops and other venues taking part in the Refill scheme. Make sure you use a designated drinking-water fountain, not an ornamental water feature.

Official interactive map

Open the Mayor of London’s drinking-fountain map. It is more useful than a static list because you can locate the nearest point and check its position before travelling.

The Mayor’s 2023–24 annual report records 110 fountains. City Hall says the network had helped avoid more than 5.8 million single-use plastic bottles. The Mayor’s Cool Spaces page also points to more than 4,000 places where people can refill for free through the Refill scheme.

Useful locations in central London

The official City Hall list includes, among others:

  • British Library and Russell Square;
  • Bloomsbury Square and Red Lion Square;
  • Farringdon Station;
  • Waterloo Station and St Thomas’ Hospital;
  • Vauxhall Bus Station and Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens;
  • Tooley Street, opposite Potters Fields Park;
  • City Hall, near the IFS Cloud Cable Car in the Royal Docks.

There are also fountains across outer London, including locations near Clapham Common, Oval, Colliers Wood, Morden, Wimbledon, Stratford, Gants Hill, Wanstead, Woodford, Blackhorse Road, Leytonstone, Balham, Southfields and Tooting Broadway stations, as well as many parks.

How to identify a fountain

Thames Water says fountains installed through the programme are topped by a blue water droplet and describes them as open at all hours. In practice, access to a fountain located within a station, park or another managed site may depend on that location’s opening arrangements, so check the map and venue information before making a special journey.

The Mayor’s 2026 update

In a London Assembly answer published on 27 March 2026, the Mayor said the installation programme finished in summer 2022 and the funding agreement with Thames Water had ended. Thames Water will, however, continue to fund the operation and cleaning of the fountains for at least 25 years. There are currently no plans to extend the programme.

That means the existing network remains supported, but Londoners should not currently expect new fountains through this scheme. The free Refill app is a useful second option: it shows cafés, restaurants, shops and other venues that allow people to refill a bottle with water.

Practical tip

Carry a reusable bottle and open the official map while you are out. If a fountain appears damaged or dirty, do not use it and choose another location. Addresses and availability can change, so the live map and Refill app are more reliable than an old screenshot.
