Winter Fuel Payment 2026/27: who gets it, and what the £35,000 threshold means
The winter heating payment for pensioners in Britain: who gets it automatically, how much (£100 to £300), and how the new £35,000 income threshold works, which can see the payment taken back. Under the current GOV.UK rules.
Thanks for £1
Winter is coming, and many pensioners in Britain are waiting for the Winter Fuel Payment — a one-off payment towards heating. The rules changed sharply over the past two years, so the question "will I get it, and how much?" is live again. Here's the breakdown under the current GOV.UK rules: who gets it, how much, and what the new £35,000 income threshold means.
Who is eligible
The payment is for people of pension age. For winter 2026/27 you qualify if you were born on or before 27 June 1960. Most people get it automatically — no claim needed — if you already receive the State Pension or certain benefits.

How much
The amount is £100 to £300, depending on your age, who you live with and which benefits you receive. It's worked out over the "qualifying week" — 21 to 27 September 2026.
| Who | Amount |
|---|---|
| Live alone, born 28 Sep 1946 – 27 Jun 1960 | £200 |
| Live alone, born before 28 Sep 1946 | £300 |
| Live with another pensioner (no benefits) | £100–£200 |
| Get Pension Credit or Universal Credit | £200–£300 |
| Live in a care home (if eligible) | £100–£150 |
It arrives by itself: a letter with your amount in October or November, and payment in November or December 2026 to the account your pension goes to.
The new threshold: income over £35,000
This is the big change behind much of the confusion. Every pensioner still gets the payment automatically, but if your individual income for the year is over £35,000, the government takes it back — through tax, with HMRC recovering some or all of it. The key detail: only your own income counts; your partner's income is not included. So the threshold applies per person, not per couple.
If your income is just over the line, only part is recovered; well over, and the whole payment goes. You don't need to declare anything separately — HMRC handles the adjustment.
What to check now
- Check your date of birth: the cut-off for this winter is 27 June 1960.
- If you don't receive a pension or benefits but qualify by age, you may need to claim it — check GOV.UK.
- Watch for the letter in October–November with your amount.
- If your income is near £35,000, remember it's assessed on you personally, not household income.
Amounts and thresholds change almost every year; check GOV.UK before acting. This is an overview, not individual advice.
