Carer's Credit: 20 hours of care a week that protect your State Pension record

The National Insurance credit pays nothing, but it fills the gaps in the record behind a £241.30-a-week State Pension. You need 20 hours of caring a week and to be 16 or over.

Someone cares for an elderly parent, gives up work or drops to part-time hours — and quietly loses years of pension record. Britain has a specific mechanism for exactly that: Carer's Credit. It pays nothing into your bank account, but it fills the gaps in your National Insurance record, and those gaps are what the State Pension is calculated from.

What is Carer's Credit and why does it matter?

It is a National Insurance credit that helps with gaps in your National Insurance record. No money is paid out. The point is elsewhere: your State Pension is based on that record, and every unfilled year reduces what you will eventually receive. The full rate of the new State Pension is currently £241.30 a week, and someone whose record started after April 2016 needs 35 qualifying years to get all of it. Anyone contracted out before April 2016 will usually need more.

One detail sets this credit apart from almost every other form of support: your income, savings or investments do not affect eligibility at all.

Who can get Carer's Credit?

Three conditions cover you. You must be aged 16 or over, under State Pension age, and looking after one or more people for at least 20 hours a week. The hours can be added together: ten hours each for two people counts.

The second condition is about the person you care for. They must receive one of these: Disability Living Allowance care component at the middle or highest care rate, Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance at those same rates, Attendance Allowance, Constant Attendance Allowance, the Personal Independence Payment daily living part, Armed Forces Independence Payment, Child Disability Payment care component at the middle or highest rate, Adult Disability Payment daily living component at the standard or enhanced rate, or Pension Age Disability Payment.

What if the person you care for gets none of those?

You may still qualify. In that case you complete a separate part of the application — the Care Certificate — and a health or social care professional signs it. That signature is what establishes the care is genuinely needed when no formal disability benefit is in payment. This is the step most people miss: they scan the list of benefits, do not find their situation in it, and close the page.

What happens if the caring stops for a while?

Short breaks do not break the credit. You can still get Carer's Credit with breaks from caring of up to 12 weeks in a row, which covers a holiday, your own illness, or a hospital stay for the person you look after. If a break runs longer than 12 weeks in a row, you should tell the Carer's Allowance Unit.

How do you claim?

Download the Carer's Credit claim form or request it by phone, fill it in, get the Care Certificate signed if you need it, and send it to the Freepost DWP Carers Allowance Unit address — no stamp and no postcode required. The unit's number is 0800 731 0297, open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

And the most useful line for anyone already inside the system: you do not need to apply at all if you get Carer's Allowance or Carer Support Payment — the credits come automatically. The same applies if you get Child Benefit for a child under 12. To see whether your own record has gaps, check your HMRC account, then count how many years you are short of thirty-five.

Thanks for £1If this information was useful and came in time, press the heart. Payment goes through PayPal, with nothing to choose and nothing to fill in, and it pays for the newsroom.
