What is free on your birthday in the UK: food, drinks and treats

On your birthday in Britain you can eat and drink coffee for free — dozens of cafes, restaurants and shops give a treat if you sign up to their app. Who gives what, and how not to miss out (spoiler: sign up in advance).

In Britain a birthday is a reason to receive, not to spend. Dozens of cafes, restaurants and shops give you a free treat on the day: coffee and cake, a doughnut, a burger or a discount. There is one condition — sign up to their app or loyalty scheme in advance and add your date of birth. Here is who gives what, and how not to miss out.

How do birthday freebies actually work?

The pattern is almost always the same: you download the brand's app or join its mailing list, add your date of birth and agree to receive messages. On your birthday (or during your birthday month) a voucher for a free item arrives. The golden rule is to sign up in advance. Many chains require you to add your date 2–4 weeks ahead, and some up to 28 days, or the reward will not come.

Where can you eat and drink coffee for free?

According to MoneySavingExpert, birthday treats are given by, among others: Greggs (a sweet treat via Greggs Rewards, voucher valid a month), Costa Club (a free sweet treat, 7 days to claim), Caffè Nero (a slice of cake, 14 days), Krispy Kreme (a free original glazed doughnut via the app), Lidl Plus (a doughnut in the app), Burger King (a free Whopper — add your date of birth at least 7 days ahead) and M&S (a Sparks treat, from food to beauty).

What about a free restaurant meal?

In restaurants the reward is usually tied to an order. Pizza Express gives a free treat when you spend £15; Zizzi a free main when you buy a second; Bill's a bottle of prosecco or a pancake stack with a main (sign up at least 4 weeks ahead and book a table); Itsu free bao or gyoza via the app. So a "free dinner" pays off mainly for those who were going to eat out anyway.

And beauty and shops?

Beauty brands join in too. The Body Shop gives a £5 voucher in your birthday month (you need a purchase in the past year), Space NK a set of beauty minis, and Boots gives double points on the Advantage Card all month. Free cinema tickets "for your birthday", though, are not something UK chains usually offer — but a free meal and coffee really are on the table.

How do you make sure you don't miss out?

A few simple rules. Sign up early — 2–4 weeks ahead. Add the correct date of birth and opt in to messages: without that the voucher often will not arrive. Watch the validity window — some last 7–14 days, others a month. And read the exclusions: many offers do not work at airports, on delivery or at certain locations. Offers change, so check the brand's app before your big day.

Thanks for £1If this information was useful and came in time, press the heart. Payment goes through PayPal, with nothing to choose and nothing to fill in, and it pays for the newsroom.
