How to reclaim overpaid Income Tax in the UK — free and without middlemen
Many people in the UK overpay Income Tax because of a wrong code, a change of job or work expenses. You can get the money back yourself through HMRC for free — there is no need to pay a middleman.
Thanks for £1
Overpaying Income Tax is common, and the state refunds it. The problem is that many people do not know, or hand part of the refund to a middleman. In fact you can reclaim the money yourself, for free, through HMRC.
Why does overpayment happen?
Common causes: you were employed and paid too much; you had work expenses (home working, travel, a uniform, tools) that qualify for tax relief; you overpaid on a Self Assessment return; you received a redundancy payment; you had UK income while living abroad; you earned savings interest or a PPI payout; or you had annuity or foreign income. Overpayment also often happens because of a wrong tax code or changing jobs mid-year.
How does HMRC tell you?
After the tax year ends, HMRC reviews the figures and, if you overpaid, sends a calculation — a P800 letter or a Simple Assessment. It says how much you are owed and how to get it: often you can request the refund online through your Personal Tax Account, and it reaches your card within a few days.
What can you claim yourself?
For many situations GOV.UK has a direct online service: it asks the reason for the overpayment and shows how to claim. There is a separate form for tax on pension payments. You can also check your current tax and code in your Personal Tax Account.
Beware of "helpers"
There are many firms and messages promising to "get your tax back" for a fee, or asking for your details. The official refund through HMRC is free, and you should always start from the GOV.UK pages, not a link in an email or text. Never give your card details or your Government Gateway sign-in to a stranger. Always get the current forms and deadlines from GOV.UK.
