60+ Oyster: free travel in London from age 60, until you get a Freedom Pass
London residents aged 60 and over can get a 60+ Oyster photocard and travel free on most of the capital's transport — even before the Freedom Pass is issued at 66.
Thanks for £1
The 60+ London Oyster photocard is a card for London residents aged 60 and over that gives free travel on most of the capital's transport. It bridges the gap between age 60 and Freedom Pass age (66), when free travel for older people is not yet available under the national scheme.
Where and when does it work?
You can travel free on buses, the Tube, trams, the DLR, London Overground and most of the Elizabeth line (except between West Drayton and Reading), and on most National Rail services within London. There are also discounts on river services and Santander Cycle Hire.
Time limits apply: on TfL services travel is free on weekdays except between 04:30 and 09:00, and at any time at weekends and on bank holidays. On National Rail the morning cut-off is 09:30, and on some Southern and Southeastern routes it is 09:00 or 09:30.
What does it cost?
The card is not free: a one-off £20 fee to apply, plus £10 a year for an annual address check. You must pass the address check every year or the card is stopped. You can apply online from two weeks before your 60th birthday; you need an email address, passport or driving licence details, a photo and a London address.
How does it differ from the Freedom Pass?
The 60+ Oyster is a separate, time-restricted card with an annual charge. The Freedom Pass (from 66) is free and valid more widely. When the 60+ Oyster nears its end, the Freedom Pass is issued automatically if you agreed to share your data when applying — no need to reapply or send a new photo. You cannot hold a 60+ Oyster at the same time as a Veterans Oyster photocard. Always check the current terms on the TfL website.
