Circle line suspended and District severe delays: London Underground today, 2 October

A points and signal failure at Gloucester Road has suspended the Circle line entirely and left the District with severe delays from Upminster to Ealing Broadway. Minor delays on the Victoria (track fault at Brixton) and Weaver (signal failure at Clapton). Croydon trams close tonight — and stay shut until 8 October. What to take instead, and what the journey home looks like.

One set of points spoiled the Friday commute. A points and signal failure at Gloucester Road has suspended the Circle line entirely and left the District with severe delays along its whole length, Upminster to Ealing Broadway. TfL's wording: "Tickets will be accepted on London Buses."

This morning: what to avoid

Circle line — suspended, no service at all. The northern half of the loop is fully duplicated: Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan run the same way through Hammersmith — Paddington — Baker Street — King's Cross — Liverpool Street, and both have a Good Service. Between Paddington and Liverpool Street the Elizabeth line is faster.

District — severe delays across the line. The trick: the Piccadilly line covers the worst stretch and has a Good Service — Earl's Court, Gloucester Road, South Kensington, Knightsbridge, Hyde Park Corner, Green Park. From the west, the Elizabeth line is quicker into town from Ealing Broadway; Piccadilly serves Acton Town and Ealing Common. From the east, take c2c from Upminster or Barking to Fenchurch Street. The southern side of the loop — Victoria, Westminster, Embankment, Tower Hill — depends on the District alone, so cross the centre on the Jubilee or by bus today.

Victoria line — minor delays due to a track fault at Brixton; the Northern line is an option from Stockwell. Weaver line (the former Chingford, Enfield Town and Cheshunt routes) — minor delays after a signal failure at Clapton. Ten minutes of slack covers both.

Tonight and the journey home

Croydon trams: Wandle Park — Reeves Corner closes after 22:00. Not a one-night job — it runs continuously from Saturday 3 to Thursday 8 October, all of next working week. If you travel late: the Jubilee line is closed Finchley Road — Stratford during Friday Night Tube, and Northern line trains will not stop at Waterloo between 02:45 and 04:15.

Weekend plans: on Saturday daytime the Jubilee is closed Green Park — Canary Wharf, the Windrush line (the former East London line) does not stop at Canada Water on either day, and on Sunday Surrey Quays — Clapham Junction and the DLR between Tower Gateway and Shadwell are closed. The full October closure calendar is in a separate piece.

What to do

Travelling via Gloucester Road, South Kensington or Earl's Court? Switch to the Piccadilly and leave 15 minutes earlier. Stay on the northern side of the loop and you lose almost nothing — Hammersmith & City, Metropolitan or the Elizabeth line. Driving today? Check fuel prices near you.

Line status changes through the day: this brief comes out once, the live board refreshes every two minutes. Before you leave the house, check line status right now.
