Windrush line delays and Croydon tram closures: London tube today, 5 October

A nearly clean morning: the whole network is in Good Service except the Windrush line, where overnight engineering work finished late and left minor delays. Croydon's tram closures are in their fourth day. The bigger catch is tonight — after 23:15 there is no Windrush service between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction, and no replacement buses at all.

This morning: what to avoid

Windrush line — minor delays, and it is the only live problem this morning. The cause is straightforward: overnight engineering work finished late, so the line goes into the peak behind schedule. Windrush is the former East London line: Highbury & Islington — Shoreditch High Street — Surrey Quays, then the branches to New Cross, Crystal Palace, West Croydon and Clapham Junction. No replacement is needed, but allow an extra 10-15 minutes. If you cannot be late, the central section has alternatives: Shoreditch High Street to Liverpool Street is a ten-minute walk, and Central and Elizabeth line are both running clean. From the south, change at Canada Water for the Jubilee.

Croydon trams — closed sections through the town centre, fourth day running. No eastbound service between Wandle Park and Centrale, no westbound service between Church Street and Wandle Park. The closure runs continuously from Saturday 3 until Wednesday 7 October, so tomorrow morning will look the same. Walking across central Croydon is often quicker — it is a couple of stops — or take a bus: tram tickets are accepted.

The rest of the network is in Good Service: all Underground lines, DLR, Elizabeth line and the remaining Overground lines are running normally. Waterloo & City is on its usual weekday pattern, 06:00-00:30, with no service at weekends.

Tonight and the journey home

Windrush: after 23:15 there is no service between Surrey Quays and Clapham Junction / Battersea Park. The detail that matters — TfL is running no replacement buses at all and says so plainly: use local London Buses and the Underground. The same applies tomorrow evening. If you head home late to Wandsworth Road, Clapham High Street or Denmark Hill, plan the route now.

Mildmay (the former North London line): the 22:29 Stratford to Richmond will terminate at Camden Road. Every evening this week through Thursday.

Planning the weekend: on 10-11 October the Circle closes between Edgware Road and Aldgate via Victoria, and the District closes from Edgware Road and Tower Hill to Ealing Broadway, Kensington (Olympia), Richmond and Wimbledon — most of the western half. Also DLR Stratford International to Woolwich Arsenal, and no Weaver line service at all until 10:15 on Sunday.

What to do

A calm morning: unless you travel on the Windrush line or cross central Croydon, change nothing. On Windrush, add 15 minutes. Tonight, the one thing to remember is 23:15 on the south-western end of Windrush — no trains and no replacement.

Line status changes through the day and the evening picture may differ — check live line status now. Previous edition: Victoria line and the Circle on 2 October. Bank holidays and holiday timetables are in the calendar.
