UK passport in 2026: what it costs, how long it takes and when Europe will turn you away
An adult passport costs £102 online and £115.50 on a paper form, and normally takes up to three weeks. Yet a technically valid passport can still keep you out of the Schengen area: it must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter, and have at least three months left on the day you leave. Here are the fees, the waiting times, the urgent services and the traps that get people turned away at the airport.
A passport is the one document no holiday works without — and the one everybody remembers a week before the flight. In 2026, alongside the usual questions of cost and waiting times, there are Schengen rules that turn away travellers holding perfectly valid passports. Here is everything from the official GOV.UK and HM Passport Office pages.
How much does a passport cost in 2026?
The price depends on how you apply. An adult 34-page passport costs £102 online and £115.50 with a paper form from a post office. A child passport (under 16) costs £66.50 online and £80 on paper. The 54-page frequent traveller passport costs more: £116/£129.50 for adults and £80.50/£94 for children. Anyone born on or before 2 September 1929 gets a passport free.

How long does it take, and when does the clock start?
HM Passport Office's official guideline: you will usually get your passport within 3 weeks. The clock starts not when you pay, but when your documents are received. If more information or an interview is needed (interviews are held by video), you will be told within those 3 weeks — but the wait will then be longer.
Two iron rules. First: do not book travel until the new passport is in your hands — the passport office warns about this explicitly. Second: your new passport will have a different number, so everything tied to the old number — visas, flight bookings, ESTA-style authorisations — will need updating. You can track your application online using the reference number.
How do you get a passport urgently?
There are two paid urgent services, both requiring an in-person appointment at a passport office (bookable up to 3 weeks ahead).
1 week Fast Track: the passport arrives by courier one week after your appointment. It costs £192 for an adult and £156.50 for a child (54 pages: £206/£170.50). It covers renewals, replacing a lost, stolen or damaged passport, changing personal details, and child passports.
1 day Premium: adult renewals only. The earliest appointment is 2 days after applying, but the new passport is ready for collection 4 hours after the appointment. It costs £239.50 (54 pages: £253.50).
A first adult passport cannot be fast-tracked — standard service only. And a costly trap: if you have already applied and are waiting, do not pay for an urgent application on top — it will not speed things up, and each extra application costs a £34.50 admin fee. For urgent compassionate travel — medical treatment, a seriously ill or deceased relative — call the Passport Adviceline instead; there is a separate route.
Why can a valid passport still keep you out of Europe?
Schengen countries apply two rules to British passports, and both are checked at flight check-in. First, the 10-year rule: on the day you enter the Schengen area, your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years ago. Passports renewed before 1 October 2018 could carry over unused months from the old passport, so their validity can stretch beyond 10 years — the passport is formally valid, but no longer good for entering Schengen. Second, the 3-month rule: on the day you plan to leave the Schengen area, the passport must have at least 3 months left. It is the exit date that counts, not the entry date.
Fail either rule and you will be refused boarding or turned back at the border. Burgundy passports with 'European Union' on the cover remain valid in themselves — only the dates matter.
How do you check your passport right now?
Open the photo page and look at two dates. Date of issue: add 10 years — you must enter the Schengen area before that day. Date of expiry: subtract 3 months — you must leave by that day. If your next trip does not fit inside those limits, renew now, allowing the 3 weeks for processing. Check children's passports too: they last 5 years and expire sooner than people expect.
What should you know about child passports?
A child passport is applied for by someone with parental responsibility, and the application needs both parents' details (if you cannot provide the other parent's details, you must say why). After an online application, someone must confirm the child's identity — they get an email from HM Passport Office, and no printed photo signing is needed any more. It costs £66.50 online and is valid for 5 years.
What about a lost or damaged passport?
A lost or stolen passport must be cancelled first, before you apply for a replacement — otherwise someone else could use it. A damaged passport must be replaced if any details are unreadable, pages are ripped, cut or missing, there are holes or rips in the cover, the cover is coming away, or pages are stained — you may not be able to travel with it. A replacement costs the same as a renewal: £102 online.
What else has changed at the European border?
Since October 2025 the Schengen borders run the EES system: fingerprints and a facial photo instead of a passport stamp — we covered it in detail. In the last quarter of 2026 the EU expects to launch the ETIAS travel authorisation at €20 — the date will be announced in advance, and you should only ever apply on the official EU website: any site 'selling ETIAS' today is fraudulent. And if your flight is delayed or cancelled, remember compensation of up to £520.
