How to get a National Insurance number in Britain in 2026

A National Insurance number is needed by everyone who works in Britain. Getting one takes up to four weeks, and applying through the official GOV.UK service is free.

A National Insurance (NI) number is your personal identifier in the UK tax and contributions system. You need it to work, to pay National Insurance and to make sure your State Pension and benefits are recorded correctly. According to GOV.UK, getting a number can take up to 4 weeks.

Who needs to apply?

Many people who grew up in Britain get a number automatically by age 16. You need to apply yourself if you have come from abroad and do not yet have one. According to GOV.UK, you can apply if you live in the UK, have the right to work in the UK, and are working, looking for work or have an offer to start work.

How does the process work?

You apply online on GOV.UK. During the process you must prove your identity: usually you upload documents and, where possible, use an app to verify an identity document. Once your application is processed, the number is sent to you by letter.

Can you work before you have the number?

Yes. According to GOV.UK, you can start work before you receive your NI number if you can prove your right to work to your employer. The employer can take you on, and you give them the number later when it arrives.

What documents should you prepare?

The exact list depends on your situation, but it usually includes identity documents (a passport) and proof of your immigration status or right to work. If you have an eVisa or digital immigration status, keep access to your UKVI account to hand.

How do you avoid scams?

The official application through GOV.UK does not require you to pay third-party "helpers". Beware websites and adverts offering to "arrange an NI number" for a fee: they duplicate a free government service and harvest your personal data.

What if you lose your number?

If you were once issued a number but have forgotten it, you do not need to apply again — the number stays with you for life. You can find it through your Personal Tax Account or on letters from HMRC.

The NI number is a basic but essential part of working legally in Britain. Get it as early as you can: the process is free, and a delay can hold up your first pay and the correct recording of contributions.

Thanks for £1If this information was useful and came in time, press the heart. Payment goes through PayPal, with nothing to choose and nothing to fill in, and it pays for the newsroom.
