Bowel cancer screening in the UK: the home test the NHS posts you and how to use it

The NHS posts a home bowel cancer test to people aged 50 to 74 every two years. Here is what the test is, how to return it, and what to do if you are over 75.

Bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers, but early on it gives almost no symptoms. That is why the NHS runs screening — regularly checking healthy people to catch disease before it shows itself. The convenient part is that the test is done at home and arrives by post on its own. Here is how it works in England.

Who gets the kit, and how often?

The kit is sent automatically to people aged 50 to 74, every two years. If you are registered with a GP, your first kit comes at 50, 52 or 54, depending on when you turned 50. You do not need to order anything — the envelope arrives at your address.

What is the test?

It is a FIT (faecal immunochemical test). The kit has a small sample bottle, an envelope and instructions. At home you collect a tiny stool sample, put it in the bottle and post it back — postage is free and you do not need a stamp. The test looks for hidden blood, which can be an early sign of disease, long before any symptoms.

When do results come?

Results usually arrive by letter within 2 weeks of posting your sample. Sometimes it takes a little longer, and occasionally you are asked to repeat it. A normal result does not mean ignoring symptoms: if you notice a change in bowel habit, blood, tummy pain or unexplained weight loss between tests, see your GP without waiting for the next letter.

What if I am over 75?

After 74 the kit is not sent automatically, but you can still request it by calling the free helpline on 0800 707 6060 (9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday). The call is free. Call the same number if you are within the age range but no kit arrived, or you lost it.

Is it free, and does it hurt?

The test is free: the kit and postage both ways are covered by the NHS, and the helpline call is free too. It does not hurt — you simply collect a tiny sample at home with the stick in the kit; there are no needles and no appointment for the test itself. You can do it quietly, in your own time, without showing anyone. If the instructions raise questions, the kit includes a support number, and plain-language guidance is also on the NHS website.

Why do the test?

It is a few minutes at home every two years — and a real chance to catch disease when it is easier to treat. Many put it off out of squeamishness, but the kit is simple and clean. If the envelope arrives, the best thing is not to set it aside but to do the test and post it back within a few days.
