Tax on perks, straight away
From 6 April 2027, employers must put company cars, employer-funded private fuel, vans and medical benefits through each payroll run. Employees should understand why take-home pay may change.
Thanks for £1
From 6 April 2027, UK employers must tax several workplace benefits through payroll at the same time as salary. Phase one covers company cars, employer-funded fuel for private use, vans, van fuel and employer-provided medical benefits.
This is not a new tax or a flat charge. These benefits are already taxable. What changes is the timing and reporting method: the taxable value and associated tax will be reported to HM Revenue and Customs on every pay date, instead of relying mainly on a year-end benefits return.

Tax on the current benefit will be collected in the same tax year in which the employee receives it. Take-home pay may therefore change from April 2027. Employers are expected to explain the new treatment before it starts.
Some employees may still have an earlier-year underpayment in their tax code. Their payslip can then look as if the benefit is taxed twice: they are paying tax on the current benefit while clearing an older debt. HMRC says employees facing hardship should contact it to discuss their circumstances.
Which benefits are in phase one?
- a company car available for private use, including ordinary travel between home and a permanent workplace;
- fuel funded by the employer for private company-car journeys;
- a company van and van fuel where a taxable private benefit arises;
- private medical insurance or medical treatment funded by the employer;
- taxable employment expenses that fall within the real-time rules.
A company car charge depends on the vehicle's list price, fuel type, carbon dioxide emissions and the period it was available. Employers and employees can estimate it with the official company car and fuel benefit calculator.
What should a small employer do?
- List every benefit and expense currently included on the annual benefits return.
- Mark cars, fuel, vans and medical benefits for mandatory phase one from 6 April 2027.
- Ask the payroll software supplier whether the product supports the new fields and real-time employer National Insurance reporting.
- Arrange for changes from human resources, leasing firms, insurers and other suppliers to reach payroll before the next pay run.
- Tell employees how their tax code and take-home pay may change.
No registration is needed for mandatory benefits. Employment-related loans and employer-provided accommodation remain voluntary. Registration for voluntary payrolling opens in November 2026 and closes on 5 April 2027.
Exception for internationally mobile staff
An employer may voluntarily exclude a globally mobile employee where cross-border working creates genuine practical difficulty in calculating the benefit on every pay date. A new online form will be available from November 2026. Once submitted, the employer will continue using the existing year-end reporting process for that employee.
