How to switch energy supplier in the UK and whether it is worth it

Switching your gas and electricity supplier is free and takes up to 5 working days. We cover fixed vs standard variable tariffs, the Ofgem price cap, the 14-day cooling-off period and the rules if you are in debt.

Switching your gas and electricity supplier in the UK is free and usually needs no engineer visit: your meters and pipes stay the same, and only the company that bills you changes. If you have spent years on a default tariff, moving to another tariff or supplier can noticeably cut your bill. The market regulator, Ofgem, sets clear rules, and it is worth knowing them before you click.

Is it worth switching energy supplier right now?

Usually yes, if you are on a standard variable tariff. That tariff is tied to the Ofgem price cap and its price moves with the market. A fixed tariff is often cheaper and gives you certainty for the whole contract term. Before switching, compare deals against your real energy use rather than a headline average figure, and check whether an exit fee applies.

How does a fixed tariff differ from a standard variable one?

A fixed tariff locks the price per unit of energy and the standing charge for the length of the contract. A standard variable tariff has no end date: the price floats and is limited only by the price cap. In short:

  • Fixed: the price will not rise until the term ends, but leaving early can mean paying an exit fee.
  • Variable: you can leave without a penalty, but the price can go up at the next price-cap review.

What is the Ofgem price cap?

It is a ceiling on prices that Ofgem reviews every three months. The cap limits the maximum price for a unit of energy and the standing charge together, but it does not cap your total bill — the more you use, the more you pay. The cap protects people on standard variable tariffs; it does not apply to fixed tariffs. You can read the detail on the Ofgem price cap page.

How long does a switch take, and what do the 14 days mean?

Your supplier must move your gas or electricity supply within 5 working days. If they miss that, your new supplier must automatically pay you 40 pounds in compensation. Separately, there is a cooling-off period: you can change your mind and cancel the switch within 14 days. Your meter and supply quality stay the same, and there is no interruption — nothing is physically reconnected at your home.

What if I am in debt or on a prepayment meter?

You can switch supplier even if you owe money, but the age of the debt matters. If you have been in debt for less than 28 days, you can switch and the amount owed is added to your old supplier's final bill. If you have been in debt for more than 28 days, you cannot switch and must clear the debt first. For a prepayment meter the rule is softer: you can move to another supplier if you owe up to 500 pounds. If paying is hard, contact your supplier as early as you can — it must discuss an affordable repayment plan with you. The step-by-step process is set out on the Ofgem switching page.

ONLYWAY NEWS advises: before leaving a fixed tariff, check its end date — that way you avoid an exit fee and can calmly pick a better deal.
