EU Settlement Scheme 2026: how to get settled status and what happens to pre-settled

The EU Settlement Scheme lets EU citizens and their families keep the right to live in Britain. Settled status comes after 5 years, and pre-settled status is now extended automatically. Applying is free.

The EU Settlement Scheme is how citizens of the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein and their family members confirm their right to live in the UK after Brexit. According to GOV.UK, applying is free, and there are two kinds of status — settled and pre-settled.

What is the difference between settled and pre-settled status?

According to GOV.UK, the type of status depends on how long you have lived in Britain: you are usually eligible for settled status after 5 years in a row. Those who have lived here less get pre-settled status, which can then be converted to full settled status.

What happens now to pre-settled status?

An important change: according to GOV.UK, pre-settled status is extended automatically by 5 years before it expires, and you are emailed when this happens. After the extension the status may be automatically converted to settled if you meet the conditions. The Home Office can cancel the extension if it thinks you no longer meet the requirements.

Can you still apply?

According to GOV.UK, the deadline for most people was 30 June 2021. But this deadline does not apply if you already have pre-settled status and are applying for settled status. You can also apply late if you have reasonable grounds, and for joining family members the deadline is usually based on their last arrival in the UK.

How do you prove your status?

EU Settlement Scheme status is digital. To show it to an employer, landlord or at the border, you generate a share code in the GOV.UK online service. There is no physical card under this scheme, so it is important to keep access to your account.

What are the limits?

According to GOV.UK, if a person arrives in the UK illegally their application will be rejected. Once you apply and receive a certificate of application, your rights are protected while it is considered, and joining family members have automatic protection for 90 days from arrival.

Even those who got pre-settled status long ago should watch their account and notifications: moving to settled status in good time secures the right to stay in Britain indefinitely.
