eVisa in 2026: how to move from a BRP card to digital immigration status

Britain has moved to digital immigration status: the plastic BRP card is replaced by an eVisa, accessed through a UKVI account. Expired BRPs can be used in a limited way until 31 December 2026.

An eVisa is an electronic record of your immigration status in the UK that replaces physical documents such as the BRP (biometric residence permit). According to GOV.UK, to view and prove your status you need a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account.

Why move to an eVisa?

Digital status lets you prove your right to live, work, study and rent online, without carrying a plastic card. Employers, landlords and border officials check your status through the government system when you give them a share code.

How do you create a UKVI account?

First check whether you already have one: according to GOV.UK, if you previously replaced a physical document with an eVisa (for example a BRP), an account may already exist. If you need to create one, have a phone number and email to sign in with, and one of these: a valid passport with your visa application number (GWF or UAN), a passport with your BRP number, or your expired BRP.

How do you confirm your identity?

After creating the account you must confirm your identity and link it to your eVisa — without this you cannot access your status. This is usually done through a smartphone app, with alternatives for those who do not have a valid passport, an expired BRP or a smartphone.

Can you still use your old BRP card?

According to GOV.UK, an expired BRP can be used to create an account until 31 December 2026, or for 24 months after the expiry date printed on the card — whichever comes first. So it is best not to delay the switch.

What should you not overlook?

Keep your UKVI sign-in details somewhere safe and keep your contact and passport details in the account up to date. If you change your passport, you must add it to the account, or you may face problems when travelling.

Moving to an eVisa is not a one-off action but a new way of holding your status. Create and check your UKVI account in advance, rather than waiting until an employer or border officer urgently needs to see your status.
