Tax-Free Childcare: how to get £2,000 a year towards childcare
For every £8 you pay in the government adds £2 — up to £500 per child every three months. The earnings floors, the £100,000 ceiling, the Universal Credit clash and the three-month reconfirmation.

Tax-Free Childcare is not a benefit someone awards you. It is an account you open yourself: you pay money in, the government adds a quarter on top, and you pay your childminder, nursery or after-school club from it. The scheme runs across the UK, and a sizeable share of the parents entitled to it still do not know it exists.
How much does the government actually add?
For every £8 you pay in, the government tops it up by £2. That is 20% of the childcare bill — or, looked at from your side, a quarter more than you put in.

You pay £200 into the account (80% of the bill), the government adds £50 (20%), and you pay the provider the full £250.
The ceiling is £500 of top-up per child every three months, up to £2,000 a year. For a disabled child it doubles: £1,000 every three months, up to £4,000 a year.
Which children are covered?
A child is eligible until the September after they turn 11. If the child is disabled, until the September after they turn 16 — and they must be certified blind or severely sight-impaired, or receive DLA, PIP, Armed Forces Independence Payment, or in Scotland Child Disability Payment or Adult Disability Payment.
How much do you need to earn?
You and your partner, if you have one, must each expect to earn over the next three months at least:
£2,643.68 before tax if you are 21 or over (the same as £203.36 a week); £2,256.80 if you are 18 to 20 (£173.60 a week); £1,664 if you are under 18 or an apprentice (£128 a week). That is the minimum wage for 16 hours a week on average.

Dividends, interest, property income and pension income do not count towards the minimum. And if you started your business less than 12 months ago, the minimum does not apply to you at all — however little you earn.
What if you are not working right now?
Work in the ordinary sense is not the only route. You can usually claim while on sick leave or annual leave, and while on maternity, paternity, shared parental or adoption leave, statutory neonatal care pay, or bereaved partner's paternity leave.
If you are not working but your partner is, you may still qualify if you get Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance, Carer's Allowance (Carer Support Payment in Scotland), contribution-based ESA, or National Insurance credits.
What rules you out?
Four things, each on its own: the child does not usually live with you; you foster the child you are applying for; your or your partner's income is over £100,000; you or your partner get a childcare bursary or grant.
And the big overlap: Tax-Free Childcare cannot be held at the same time as Universal Credit or childcare vouchers. Which is better depends on the household, and GOV.UK points you at the childcare calculator. One practical detail matters: do not cancel Universal Credit until you have a decision on your Tax-Free Childcare application. If you have vouchers, you must tell your employer within 90 days of applying.
What you need to apply, and how long it takes
National Insurance numbers — yours and your partner's. A Unique Taxpayer Reference if you are self-employed. Your child's UK birth certificate reference number, if you have one. And the date you started or are due to start work (approximate is fine if it was more than three months ago).
The application takes about 20 minutes. You usually find out immediately, or within 10 days if extra checks are needed. If you live in England, HMRC will also check your eligibility for Free Childcare for Working Parents at the same time.
The trap: every three months
The account does not run itself. Every three months you must sign in to your childcare account and confirm your details are up to date. Miss it and Tax-Free Childcare stops. The same screen is where you top the account up, pay your provider, and add another child.
One more condition people discover late: your provider must be signed up to the scheme. Check that before you apply, not after.
