The Personal Tax Account is an online service from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that lets an individual check their records and manage their personal details. Below ONLYWAY NEWS explains exactly what this account offers and how to sign in, relying only on official GOV.UK pages.

What is the HMRC personal tax account?

It is a secure online account on the HMRC portal where you can view your tax records and update them. GOV.UK states the purpose as using your personal tax account to check your records and manage your details with HMRC. The service is also available in Welsh.

What can you do in the account?

The list of features on the GOV.UK page is wide. Through the personal tax account you can:

  • check your Income Tax estimate and your tax code;
  • submit, view or manage a Self Assessment tax return;
  • claim a tax refund;
  • check your Child Benefit;
  • check your income from work and how much Income Tax you paid in the previous 5 years;
  • check your State Pension;
  • check whether paying voluntary National Insurance contributions would benefit you, and whether you can pay online;
  • track tax forms you have submitted online;
  • check or update your Marriage Allowance;
  • tell HMRC about a change of name or address;
  • check or update work-related benefits, such as company car details and medical insurance;
  • find your National Insurance number and your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR), if you already have one;
  • check your Simple Assessment tax bill.

What is not handled here?

Registering for Self Assessment and getting a UTR is done through a separate service. Reporting and paying Capital Gains Tax on UK property is also a separate service. The personal tax account shows your data but does not replace these specialist services.

How do you sign in to the personal tax account?

You sign in on the HMRC sign-in page through the Start now button, which goes to the tax.service.gov.uk domain. According to GOV.UK, there are 2 ways to sign in to HMRC online services: Government Gateway and GOV.UK One Login. Government Gateway uses a user ID of up to 12 characters and a password. GOV.UK One Login uses an email address and a password, and it is the route used for personal tax services in particular.

Do you need to prove your identity?

Yes. During sign-in the service will tell you if you need to prove your identity. GOV.UK notes that this normally involves using photo ID like a passport or driving licence. GOV.UK One Login is described as a new way of signing in that will, over time, replace all other sign-in routes including Government Gateway; the change happens gradually and not for everyone at the same time.

What if you do not have sign-in details yet?

If you do not have sign-in details, you can create them during sign-in by choosing to create new sign-in details. Customers without existing HMRC online sign-in details are among the first to be asked to create a GOV.UK One Login. The GOV.UK personal tax account page was last updated on 30 September 2026. ONLYWAY NEWS recommends checking the exact steps on GOV.UK itself, as the sign-in interface is gradually changing.
